Post subject:  Oil light keeps coming on

Hi, I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty with a 3.7 liter.
I am having the oil light coming on when the engine is warm and when it revs up to a certain rpm it goes off. I took it by the dealership to have a recall
Done on it and they told me it was the oil switch connector.
So replace the oil persure sensor connector and the oil pressure switch.
I thought that this might do the trick but nothing. So I returned the switch and got another thinking it might be bad but same story. Light still keeps coming on.
No oil leaks and no strange noises coming from the engine. I am not sure what this could be.
If anyone has any idea what this could be, please let feel free to put out your suggestions.

Thank you

Have you replaced the oil filter and the oil?
Using the correct engine oil?
May need an engine drain and flush and re-fill or oil pump on its way out

Download the KJ service manual here to get some more information....2004 KJ is not listed so use the 2003 KJ Service Manual which will be close enough...lots of changes made in 2005!

I have changed the oil and filter. I might try an engin flush. It has not had one. Any recommendations on flush kit?
Has 140,000 miles on it. if this does not do the trick I will see about changing the oil pump
Thank you

I was doing some research and sounds like it could also be the oil pick up tube. Are these pretty common for getting clogged and needing replacing.
I am thinking of buying one and replacing it while doing a flush and new oil.

Very possible if oil changes have been neglected and dino oil was used, oil pickup tube will be hard to access, if i recall correctly will have to pull the engine to get the oil pan off.

Ok, I did an engine flush. Pulled the oil pan off and was able to get the oil pickup tube changed with a new one and new gasket. Put new oil in it and added a Lucas oil additive. Let it warm up to operating temp and ding the light came back on. I have no idea. I guess it is the oil pump going out! Is there any thing else anyone can figure it would be? Is there anyway to bypass the ding and light so that it does not come one? It is driving me crazy...

This I have done to fix this:
-Changed pickup tube
-engine flush
-new oil and filter
-new oil pressure switch
-new oil pressure switch connector

Please help.

You need an oil pressure gauge. No other way to know exactly what the oil pump is doing.

You can try running a thicker oil. Like maybe a 15w-40 or a 20w-50.
But that will only be a temporary fix if your oil pump or crankshaft bearings are worn out.

Replace the oil pump; it is not to bad of a job, it is located behind the timing chain. A half a day job! I would also replace the water pump and timing chain since you got to take both of them off anyway to replace the oil pump...
If a new oil pump does not solve the problem your only other option is to replace all the main bearings as they are worn out and loosing the oil pressure. If that is the case, I would strongly suggest rebuilding the entire engine or replacing it with a good low mileage used engine from someone like LKQ or a remanufactured crate engine...

Ok tested the oil pressure. Around 5 to 6 pSI's while up at operating temperature and idling.
Not sure what it should be sitting at while idling. Any ideas?

Most engines should be no lower than ~7 psig at normal operating temperature at idle speed. Most oil pressure switches trip around 3-5 psig to give a low oil pressure alarm or low oil pressure warning light.
Oil weight/viscosity will affect these pressures slightly! Older high mileage vehicles should run slightly heavier weight oils to help offset engine bearing wear and / or clearances....
The use of an oil additives such as Lucas Oil Stabilizer can also help by increasing oil viscosity slightly which will in turn increase oil pressure slightly over the operating RPM range of the of motor...
