Driving in to work this morning I noticed a grinding sound coming from the differential area. Looking underneath there is a pretty good leak from the passenger side axle seal (showing part # 5066066aa). At this point I am just trying to limp it home so I refilled the differential but I am still getting grinding noises when I hit a bump or I turn (always just temporary and goes away when I go back to straight driving). Is it safe to drive home? Would be about 15 miles at highway speeds, or do I need to look at getting a tow? Thoughts on what could be causing the grinding? Thanks.

Grinding from the differential is not good. Best to get a tow.

I have run my Liberty without the axle shafts and propeller shaft before. It was like driving a 2wd Liberty for a few weeks.

Got it back. Seal changed out seems to have fixed the issue, no grinding and tried selec trac and 4wd with no issues. I suspect seal was bad enough that it allowed axle shaft to rub when it hit a bump. Appreciate all the help.

if it was pass. side, it was more likely that the intermediate shaft has worn splines and was disengaged from the cv splines causing a wobble in the shaft tearing the seal up and the subsequent slippage of the splines causing the grinding

I'm having many issues from my passenger side cv also... a shop put it on a lift in neutral and at full droop the passenger side is in full bind and won't rotate freely

I've replaced the cv twice in two weeks and now the seal is leaking . I've attached a video of the movement I'm getting from the pass cv... is this common movement for a worn half shaft or are things not fully seated? It feels like the clips are seated because I can't just pull everything apart but I'm not sure...

two things could be happening, well, two more likely things anyway, out of 3 or 4

1. the new cv is a actual new cv rather than a remanufactured cv and is not the correct length
2. the intermediate shaft splines are worn and is not engaging the cv correctly allowing it to move
(3.) both

One replacement was a reman(from auto zone) that was too short that ended up ripping itself apart and it still wiggled

The other (the one in the video) is a new cv from auto zone.

And there lies the problem.
Been discussed many times over the years about not using ones from Autozone etc, they are all too short generally

I see, the one I'm running currently doesn't "seem" to short but it probably not helping the situation... I inspected my half shaft before and it looked to be in good shape. I'll tear her apart again soon and post my results
