Anyone know the lifespan of a KJ starter? I've been getting some misses lately and the battery is still good. I removed and cleaned the terminals recently. I wonder if it's time. Thanks

05 KJ bought new with OEM starter with no issues. I have replaced the battery 2x. That's the only thing replaced with the starting system. I don't think there is a magic date to replace things. One starter could go bad quicker than another. Many variables.

Are you sure it is the starter? Could be the ign. switch or activation rod, or the starter relay. More info would helpful!
What exactly is it doing and what have you tested so far?

The only thing that I've tested so far is the battery which tests good, 2 years old. Cleaned the terminals and removed all corrosion. Alternator is only 2 years old too.

How would I test the ignition switch? Could be this? or starter relay? Where is the activation rod?

Mine lasted from when it was installed until I replace it.

The owner of a electric shop that rebuilds them told me that 180k is a lot of miles for a starter. Sure, it might make it to 250, but unlikely. I replaced mine preemptively at 195 to avoid a breakdown.

Thanks, I'm at around 190K+, looks like a new starter is coming soon. Maybe a new starter relay too if they are cheap.

Np, then again, my diesel starter has a lot more load on it, but it's probably a little heftier also. I'm guessing it's a wash, but I go to remote places where a bad starter would be a serious problem :ALONE:

The starter relay is located n the power distribution center next to the battery under the hood! If it is going bad, it will prevent the starter from operating...
See page 8W-10-3 in the FSM

The electrical device that is mounted on the starter motor is a "Starter Solenoid" and normally it does come already attached to the starter motor when purchased as a unit!

Generally speaking, a starter motor can last for a very long time if not abused. It is the solenoid and / or relay that usually wear out and go bad first...
I have seen original equipment starter motors over 60 years old that are still working perfectly today!
