I cannot get this to latch closed now. I have the usual latch issue when I open it, I need to press the hatch button to have it go to the correct position to close, but now it won't latch.

I took the rear cover off so I could see the latch. It almost appears as if the bar on the window is too HIGH for the latch? I can't even force it into the closed position over the bar with a screwdriver for leverage.

Anyone experience this before?

It sounds like the switch on the lever isn't working for whatever reason. should be the switch or the wiring.

Switch seems to work, as when I press the button the latch moves to the correct position. I can also move it easily to the open position by hand.

The switch I was referring to is the one that is part of the pull-handle for the rear door. There is a switch on the inside that should also kick the window latch. If it's not working, or if your battery is dead, it will allow the window to release and raise but will not pull the window latch to the correct position for closing and latching the window.

If your key remote button works, the fault would have to be with the switch inside the gate at the handle, or the wiring from / for that.

Is there a way to bypass the switch, so I can get this hatch closed and my dome light off (pulled the fuse for now).

Thanks

Usually you can use the glass release button on the remote and then you're able to close it and it will latch.

:BINGO:

If that still doesn't latch the hatch with a reasonable firm closure, it's possible that the catch has been bent towards the vehicle interior, so when closing it doesn't match. Just bend the catch towards the back hatch just enough that the catch and the latch match.

No, no bingo, unfortunately. Let me try again....

The button on the remote works. I can click the button, and move the latch to the correct position, BUT:

Slamming the glass does not work. Having someone push the glass closed while I try to have the latch move to the locked closed position doesn't work.

I will go check mine again in the morning to refresh my mind what adjustments are available and what might be bent out of place.

Hmm.. sounds like something mechanical on the latch + handle switch. I'd probably just go to the junk yard and pull a latch, handle and all the wiring and be done with it. It's pretty simple to remove it all.

On mine, it is easy to see where the rear glass catch bar strikes due to the mark it makes on the square flat kicker pad to the left of the latch. It leaves a horizontal mark that matches the proper point on the latch to rotate it back.

Quick question. Has the plastic cover on your latch rotating/holding mechanism worn through or come off? If it has, then the glass catch bar would be unable to push it far enough to lock.

There doesn't appear to be any major source of glass catch bar vertical adjustment apart from the hinge mounts. check section 23 in the service manual http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/2006-KJ-SM.pdf

There is forward and back adjustment of the flip-up glass latch, with the mounting points to the door.

On mine, the rear glass catch bar isn't at 90 degrees to the glass. It sits at a downward angle when about to close, and appears that is the way it's designed. You might check if yours has been bent upwards, closer to 90 degrees somehow, since you said that it strikes high.

That's what I thought too. No go. The new switch and the new latch did the same thing. In fact, the old latch with the new switch, old latch with the old switch, and new latch with the old switch all performed the same. So, scientifically....something else besides the switch and it operating the latch must have been out of whack.

Now, unbeknownst to all of you, I have recently become the owner of aNOTHER 2006 CRD. So my wife and I took a look at the two latches together, and guess what we noticed?

Wait for it......

IT WAS THE POSITION OF WHERE THE LATCH WAS MOUNTED TO THE TAILGATE. I loosened the 13mm bolts, moved the latch towards the rear/spare tire (which in fact moves it upwards), and then it latched.

Remember when I said this in the first post:
Quote:
It almost appears as if the bar on the window is too HIGH for the latch? I can't even force it into the closed position over the bar with a screwdriver for leverage.

I was 100% wrong....the window wasn't high, the latch was too low. And I ran off with all the info on the red herring of the possible latch and wiring - not only with the comments here, but with everything else I could find. It's simple case of assuming that you know what the problem is because of what it usually is, instead of looking closer.

Thanks for all the help guys, sincerely, as it did help me to eventually eliminate things down and find the root cause of the issue. I certainly hope that this helps someone else in the future, and saves them from buying new switches and latches (which were junkyard finds with new hardware, and now I have a spare for each jeep. )

Thanks again, the forum and members here are awesome. :)

Thanks for letting us know. I could see on mine that the adjustment moved forwards and backwards, but I didn't loosen it or know that it also moved it up and down. I learned something new today. thanks

It's not necessarily that it moves up and down, but that it is mounted on a slant. The difference is negligible, but enough to make the latch catch.
