Post subject:  A/C diagnostic help

I just replaced the low pressure a/c line on my liberty. Then I added a can of refrigerant and she blows cold! I decided to call a mechanic to see if they could put the good set of gauges on it since the only thing I have is the cheap single gauge unit. They told me that they need to charge me $120 to completely evacuate the system then refill it. Is that correct? There is no way I'm going to pay that, but is there something I need to do like that?

Thats a fair price.

You could buy a decent dual gauge set for about half that and do it yourself if you know what you are doing.

forget about the gauges. They told me that I need to totally evacuate the system and refill it for some reason. I just want to know if that is correct of if it's overkill. If I need to do it to prevent a problem I will. the only thing funny I've noticed since I fixed it is that the compressor engages after you start the engine and never disengages

The shop will be able to properly diagnose your AC system.
They will also vacuum all your freon out and verify that it have no leaks.
They will then fill the system with freon to its proper weight, not pressure.

Thanks for the advice. I spoke with another shop and they explained the danger of having air in the system. So I'm having it done.

Automotive AC systems are filled by weight.

You have no idea how much you have in it and neither do they so yes they would have to completely evac the system, pull a vacuum, and refill by the required weight.

That is about $100-$150 depending on how much R134A needs to be added.
