Anyone change their catalytic convertors? I got the P-0420 engine code and my Liberty mileage is around 200K.

How hard is the job?

Also, anyone know why most of the online sellers won't ship or sell to California? Does California have special rules regarding the catalytic conv?

Thanks

Because there are 3 tiers of cats....................

Top tier = OEM and over 90% efficient, this includes cats sold aftermarket under the OEM cat manufacture name brand also(both most expensive cats) and are 50 state legal. Will have a CARB certified label.

Middle tier = Mid price range cats,48 state legal and only 66% efficient.

Bottom tier = Those cheap cats(all of the universal fit cats) and are only 33% efficient,in most cases will not pass emissions.

The bottom 2 can not be sold in CA or NY by state laws.

CA has some of the toughest emissions control laws.
You have to bend to their rules.

Problem might be a bad cat.
Or it might be a bad rear O2 sensor.

I would start by replacing the rear O2 sensor.
And maybe try some fuel additive for cleaning the cat.
If neither of those work then you will need a new cat.

P0420/P0430 codes show up only with a functioning down stream O2 sensor(s).

There is no way to "clean" a cat, once it has lost it's ability to produce O2 it's done and needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the tips. The error code/engine light went away. I wonder if something else is wrong?

I got the engine light after a long 10 hour drive back from Mendocino.
