If you have ever driven on a concrete highway and got the thunk, thunk, thunk noise as you go over individual sections that is what I am experiencing. Usually starts between 20-40 MPH but may stick around outside of those ranges. At 60+ usually don't notice it but if I go uphill or down hill it may start. If I take my foot of the pedal it usually stops but comes back once I apply pedal. That being said I have had times where it continues without pedal until the vehicle slows down (usually 5-10 miles). Seems to be from drivers side and has been around for about 6 weeks but seems to be getting worse. Things I have replaced in the last two years: Wheel hubs (both sides) - past weekend rotated tires - past weekend Removed front driveshaft CV axles - remanufactured OEMs by a respectable shop year ago lower ball joint - 2 years ago Tie rods - year ago Driver side axle seal 2 years ago, passenger 15 months ago Upper ball joint (al arm) - year ago sway bar bushings - year ago rear drive shaft ujoints - 6 months ago I am leaning toward CV axle but I also see my lower control arm bushings are looking a little rough (they are original) so not sure where to start spending money? If it is lower control arm, my understanding is it is easier/cheaper to buy new arm than buy the tools + bushing and replace yourself. (I see the tools on ebay for $150-$250). I assume that removing LCA drives need for an alignment? |

Have you replaced the intermediate shaft? I had symptoms like that and at first I thought it was an out of balance tire and at lower speeds it was a clunk. Is there any play where the driver's CV goes into the diff? |

Play seemed normal for drivers side but I intend to mess with it again before I order anything. Definitely no leaks from the differential. Reused the intermediate shaft from oem when it was rebuilt as it looked to be in good shape. Appreciate the response as I hadn't thought of the intermediate shaft. |

My LR3 just had the lower control arms replaced last summer...what happens when you slam hard on the brakes from 5 or 10 mph? Any clunk or thud? That's what the LR3 used to do. Plus various pops and clunks on road bumps. |

I will give that a try and see. Only noise I notice is a right turn (sharp) give me a tingy metal moving sound (I am describing it poorly) that I have attributed to the upper a arms movement but in thinking about it it could be the lower arm drooping. |

I've actually never seen a set of UCA bushings go bad on these, but anything is possible. Even switch the arms from side to side...not that hard to do. If it was a CV, I'd think it'd get worse in 4WD, does it? The other thing I'd do is move the driver's tire somewhere else or switch it with the spare. Maybe there's a damaged belt or something. |

No real change in 4wd that is part of what is really confusing me. Already moved the tire, no change. |

Could the cv axle be removed and still driven around? I am guessing not but never really put much thought into it. |

I think you'd risk loosing the diff fluid and grenading the diff. I think you'd want to take the other end out too but that probably won't help isolate it. What about switching the UCAs side to side? Did you try the brake test for the LCAs? |

Did the brake test, no clunking or other noise. Due to work and a recent procedure I haven't had a chance to mess with UCA. The more I ha be listened it seems to be tied to a rotational type noise so I am leaning very heavily towards cv. |

Replaced driver side cv axle, no change. Swapped uca (also ball joint on the one going from driver to passenger). Bushings looked almost brand new. Noise is still there, I think it moved towards passenger side but honestly I was tired and I may have conditioned myself to think it moved because I have no other answers. I am going to give a listen tomorrow and see if I still think it moved. I didn't think about it until I quit for the day but I am starting to wonder about engine and transmission mounts. Will take a closer look tomorrow. |

Noise didn't move, as I suspected was just tired. Still sounds tied to rotational noise. Have transmission mounts on order and I am looking at doing the u joints. Ujoints Replaced 9 months ago but of the things that rotate seems cheapest / easiest to redo. Will update as I go. |

Replaced u joint and driver side motor mount, no change. Transmission mount in transit (130k need to change out anyways). Going to change passenger motor mount (had got mounts already in hand) next. After that only thing left is intermediate shaft and passenger cv. Holding that one to last because sound is distinctly on driver side but I suspect intermediate shaft may be my culprit. Trying to go cheapest / needed replacement anyways and up but i will be happy to figure out this sound. |

Replaced passenger cv, intermediate shaft and transmission mount. One of those three fixed the noise. I suspect passenger cv & intermediate shaft. |

Glad it's fixed! Once the parts came out, was there visual evidence of noise-making and failure? |

Not really. Intermediate shaft was a little worn down but it was only really noticeable when placed next to the new one. There was some play where the intermediate shaft connects to the cv axle but again not a smoking gun. |

If one of the previous owners took it off road and a rock damaged the CV boot say, allowing the grease inside to escape, and water to get into the joint, this would lead to premature wear...Glad you got it sorted. |
