Bought a Hayden 2905 fan clutch in October to replace the (probably) OEM dead one that our KJ came with. By April, it was shot.

Replaced it with another Hayden 2905. That was dead within a couple of weeks.

Replaced that one with a Hayden 2986 and did the GM 11-blade fan conversion at the same time. That was a week-and-a-half ago, and it was dead when I checked it two days ago.

Ordered another Hayden 2986 to replace it; it should be here tomorrow or the next day. Looking forward to finding out if its life expectancy can be measured in more than hours.

Has this just become typical of Hayden's quality control? I've never had this much trouble with fan clutches (including Hayden) before, and am at a total loss to explain why two different models ordered from three different vendors can all be complete and utter rubbish.

No idea what to do if this one fails other than order the OEM GM part, but I certainly won't be buying Hayden again. Either way, no A/C in 90°F weather is not going to be tolerable for very long.

I don't have the answer. I've not had a problem with mine since over a year. It doesn't completely lock up or completely release, but they aren't supposed to. It does cycle the fan more and less when it heats/cools.

Hayden has never been good to begin with, also the main factor is how the parts house stores the clutches.Store them wrong and there DOA or fail in short order.

The one that's in there now is weak enough that I can stop it by hand at idle after 45 minutes of freeway driving in 90°F heat. Turning on the A/C shows how badly it just can't keep up at speed.

True, Hayden's never been particularly spectacular, but this sort of failure rate is just unreal.

When the next one gets here, I'm going to test the spring with the heat gun. If it doesn't contract, I'm not even going to bother installing it.

And it arrived today. Gave it the heat gun treatment; the spring did contract and rotational resistance while holding on to the main nut increased significantly.

I'll install it tomorrow and see what happens. If it doesn't make an appreciable difference, a new radiator and hoses might be in my future. Ugh.

I bought new Hayden last summer. Winter engine was much colder engine than last year. Even with full grill blocked. Even today was about 50 degree at start. Has that howl of fan engaged when first started. My coolant temp was 188 degrees with the 192 thermostat I'm running and outside temp of 59 degrees.

Problem is, many of thel fan clutches are made by Hayden or Four Seasons in the US under different brand names.
They supply the automotive aftermarket retailers and a lot of the OEM manufactures with fan clutches.
Hayden is part of the Four Seasons Division / Standard Motor Products, Inc.

When I installed my 11 blade GM fan a couple of years ago, I purchased the fan clutch PN 271625 from NAPA
I bought NAPA since I can get wholesale garage pricing from them. Not sure who makes NAPA fan clutches???
So far it is still functioning properly. Maybe I got lucky?

Hayden states their fan clutches have a one year/12k warranty, so I hope you are not having to pay for replacements?

Since your Haydens keep failing, maybe you might want to try a different brand like NAPA?

GM OEM PN for fan clutch -- 20913877
Alternate/OEM GM Part Number(s): 15073014, 154558, 154848, 15710101, 20913877, 22149877

Nope, they've all been warranty returns. Which is fine, but there's only so much warranty replacement I want to do in a row.

Yep, that's pretty much the plan. In the middle of radiator replacement right now, so we'll see if that makes any difference before going after the fan clutch again.

New radiator, hoses, serpentine belt, fan clutch, and fan (well, I reused that one) are in along with another coolant change less than 6 months after the last one.

Been driving in 95°F heat with the A/C constantly on and 203°F thermostat installed for the last two days. 75mph on the freeway or 0.75mph in crawling traffic, the temperature needle sits midway between the last mark before normal and normal. It just doesn't move. I'll see if anything changes when I get out of my flatland commute and into some hills, but so far the cooling issues seem to have abated if not been outright solved.

No idea which component was to blame (my money's on multiple items), but given how much stuff was changed out I'll never know. Either way, just happy to not be running overly-warm any longer. I'll probably swap out to a 190°F thermostat (or possibly even a 175°F) for towing, but at least that's quick & easy.
