Post subject:  Aluminum Ladder Rack on KJ?

I cut and collect lumber with my KJ. I was thinking about getting a cheap used ladder rack of Craigslist or such on modifying it to fit the KJ. I need to move a ladder and lumber. It would also be nice if I ever strike it rich and get a roof tent. I would want it to go as far back as it can without hitting the hatch glass and maybe extend over the windshield a little. I would incorporate the mounts into the rack. I have al aluminum TIG welder that I am getting dangerously competent with. I may add some type of body mount to make it have a greater load capacity. How much weight can be put on the roof rail mounting points?

Come one, someone must have put a bunch of weight up there and it went well or didn’t. I understand that the composite mounts need to be replaced with metal ones. After that, I figured it could support a respectable amount of weight (though I imagine handling characteristics would go out the window). This project would be done mostly to move lumber short distances and to make it easy to move kayaks.

Don't have any knowledge relative to your question, but I DO like your new hobby!

I believe that's one you could make some blackmarket scratch on eventually.
