Post subject:  05 fuel gauge problems?

Had a problem with my fuel gauge within 2 miles of the dealership right after I purchased it. After a couple of hours of diagnostics, they determined that it was the pump/sender. A week later it was replaced and reads erratically and sometimes not at all.

Off to dealer #2 ( my normal guy). He had 6 pumps/senders on order for KJs with problems. This should have been a signal of a bigger problem! :o

Parts are now in and it still doesn't work properly. Tech line at Jeep admits that there is a problem and told the service manager to reset the computer and watch the trip odometer until they find a fix and can out a field fix. :x

Anyone else having a problem? If so, help is on the way.
:)

The question is when?

I haven't seen this, although, i'm only on the 3rd tank of gas. I'm going to watch it more closely now. Is it just not working, or does it just read wrong?

You never stated what the problem was. Does the guage not work?

Sorry for not identifying the issue(s)..

1st problem ... gauge reads empty with low fuel indicator light on with full tank of gas and 12 miles on vehicle!

2nd problem with new sender.... sometimes reads empty with low fuel indictor regardless of fuel level and sometimes just reads wrong

3rd problem with same sender as #2... takes 11-13 gallons of fuel at 3/4 on gauge.

Other than that it works great

Update:

Gas guage still not working :x This must be the 8th or 9th time in for repair. My dealer is having a rash of these by the way. Evey the loaner Liberty has a guage that doesn't work. Had the sender replcaed, dash checked BCM reflashed twice and now another sender.

I sure hope it works this time. It hasn't worked one day since we bought it last July. It only has 9000 miles!

If anyone has any leads on what to check let me know.

I say contact DC corporate and look up lemon laws for your state. Bringing it in 8 or 9 times to repair the same thing on a vehicle with only 9000 miles is absurd! Time to call that one a loss and get DC to give you a new one.

A few years ago (maybe 2000?), the sending units used in Jeeps were found to be manufactured with a material that broke down when exposed to certain formulations of gasoline. Symptoms like the above were all over the place, when the sending units were removed the had black gunk all over them. The fix was to replace the sending units with ones not that didn't have the problematic material (since replacing it with another factory unit just caused the same thing to happen when the new one also got gunked up).

I have no idea if something similar is happening now, but?

I've not had any problems with my TJ's fuel gauge readings after getting the sending unit replaced a couple years ago. The KJ's has never had a problem.

I'm sure they won't ake it back under Lemon laws for something like this and I really like the vehicle.

For the first time it seems to be reading correctly  I will wait and see if it stays that way. They replaced the sender with another manufacturer.

This crazy thing failed within 2 miles of taking delivery. We got the choice basically of full, half or empty and sometimes it read half and was empty...

Cross your fingers that it works correctly now...

My 04, since around Nov 05, has not been pegging out when filled up. It's just over 1/8th away from the stop peg on the guage. I've even filled it up all the way to the cap and it still doesn't matter. I did notice the last time I filled up, it did hit the peg but the only thing different then before was the outside temp. It was in the 60's. The temp dropped about 30 degrees a couple days ago and noticed it's not going to the top again. It's got 31k on it so I'm going to take it in before the warrenty runs out and get it on record that it's got a problem. The only other problem is it drops too fast when driving.

seems like they have a new sensor unit, it is part number 5102528AA, it cost 47.11 from franklin Sussex auto mal (www.chryslerpartsdirect.com)
is not hard to replace if you are willing to go inside the tank.

Did you ever fix your fuel gauge problem? If so what was the fix? My 03 is having the same problems, the dealer changed the sender but the problem is still there. I would like to get this fixed, it sucks to always monitor the tripmeter.

I asked the dealer about that number 5102528AA and they said it is for 2003 that were built after a certain date (I think it was after May 03). The build date for my 03 falls before May 03. The dealer replaced the sender (with no success) with this part number 5019863-AB

wilfredcruz, do you know if this will fix our problem? did you try it yourself?

Thanks for the help...
