My mom just recently noticed a blinking red light on the dashboard of her 2005 Jeep Liberty Sport. It only blinks when the car is closed and locked, and the overhead lights are off(during one test, where I was locked in the car sitting in the driver's seat in hopes of getting a closer look, said lights were stubbornly refusing to turn off, which was worrying in and of itself). Googling seems to match it to the security alarm in that it blinks when its active, but the fact that mom only now first noticed it after owning the car since early 2006 is making her wary that it means something not good was done to the car. Can any Jeep experts weigh in?

Normal when vehicle is locked due to security system.
Guess your mom is just not very observant? :ROTFL:

If you lock the Jeep from outside with your remote fob the light starts blinking.

Now open a door using the key in a door lock and the alarm should go off as it thinks someone is trying to force their way in.

I did this once in a parking lot and had to silence the alarm by means of the key fob.

I'm Not familiar with the exported models, but for domestic models that usually only happens with aftermarket security systems.

Opening by pulling on the inside handle will set it off
Unlocking by any other means than the proper key will set it off.
For some, tilt / impact sensors will set it off, but unless that's already happened, it's not likely to have any relevance here.
