I recently bought my 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD. Yesterday I was driving with 1/4 tank of fuel. The next time I looked down the gauge showed full, and still shows full. Today I started some errands aware that I had 1/4 tank left. Suddenly the engine sputtered a couple of times and died. I coasted to the side of the Highway. I thought, If the gauge is inaccurately showing full, it may have been inaccurately showing 1/4 tank. I tried the primer and could tell there was nothing there. Called my brother and we dumped a gallon of diesel in. After priming, it started, and I drove directly to a fuel station and filled it up. It took 15 gallons. With the gallon we added on the side of the highway, that totals 16 gallons. Online it shows that the Liberty has a 20.5 gallon tank. So there should have been roughly 4 gallons left in the tank. Or 1/4 tank as the gauge originally showed. How am I running out of fuel with 4 gallons left in the tank? :dizzy:

Have you installed an intank fuel pump?
If you do not have an intank pump; the suction hose inside the fuel tank module more than likely has a hole in it or has broken. It is a hard plastic tube. See picture of OEM tank module below.
If you are going to drop your fuel tank to replace it, it would be an excellent opportunity to install an intank fuel pump as many owners have already done. It is a drop in fix in place of the OEM unit. The only difference is one has an electric lift pump in the module.
See this thread for information on installing the intank fuel module with pump:> viewtopic.php?f=5&t=26385

Thanks for your input. That makes sense to me. I also thought that it was likely that for some reason the pickup is not reaching the bottom of the tank. I've ordered the lift pump and wire harness from Sasquatch Parts. I'll let you know what I find when I remove the old one. Thanks again!

Great Move!!! Your Jeep will love you for adding the lift pump. It will run better and idle smoother by having a lift pump installed.
And, after you get it installed, you can add an additional 2 micron secondary fuel filter to further protect the expensive CP3 injection pump the the 4 injectors.
I can provide a complete kit to install one.

Post subject:  Re: Out of fuel at 1/4 tank - PROBLEM SOLVED

I've been meaning to get back here for a while and post for other peoples benefit. I dropped the tank on my CRD and removed the fuel pickup. I was shocked to find that the rods and springs that connect the top of the sender to the bottom, were just laying on the bottom of the fuel tank. The bottom portion of the pickup was swinging around like a pendulum from the pickup hoses. When I would stop at a light, I would hear a a clunk, clunk, clunk. I now realize that I was hearing, was the bottom of the pickup banging around as the fuel swished back and forth. I have no idea how this could come loose. Especially considering that when you install it there is spring pressure holding the bottom in place, and the bottom of the tank is molded to seat the fuel pickup. I've included a pic of the new pickup next to the old one to show what it should look like. I replaced the old pickup with Sasquach Cummins In-Tank Lift Pump for Retrofit. I debated for a while because when you include the wiring harness its nearly 3 times what a simple fuel pickup would be. But now that its done I'm confident I did the right thing. Plus, priming the system is now a breeze. Turn on the key, open the bleed valve at the filter and wait for fuel to spit out.

Gosh that is ugly indeed!!!
I can't imagine how that could have happened. First I have ever seen of this.
You certainly did the right thing, adding an intank lift pump is one of the very best mods you can do to this vehicle.

PS. I fixed your picture links so they would show,
you must put the address in-between the brackets.
