The article I read said they are not going to spend the time or money finding a clean diesel for the Liberty but will put the 3 litre Mercededs in the Grand Cherokee instead.

Here's another articl from Autoweek:
http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a ... 05020/1024

The Liberty CDR outperformed Jeep's sales expectations, I gotta believe they're going to offer a cleaner diesel in the KJ in the near future.

On a seperate note, I heard DC was recently testing a diesel in the new Wrangler. I'd say its a VERY good possibility that Jeep is going to make a big push to get diesels into more vehicles.

I would bet that we haven't seen the last Liberty Diesel.

Cause, you know, '08 Liberty on the larger platform that the Nitro is using might just have that cleaner option in it.

What is really strange is that they stopped production on May 20, 2006. They could have produced all the way through the end of the year. That is what VW is doing to saturate the market with '06 diesels until they can get their '08 diesels in compliance.

Jeep has dumped the Liberty CRD. One article states it was basically a test case to see if the market is there for the diesel Grand Cherokee. $$$

I've heard and can't remember where it was I read it but the Italian Company that manufactured the diesel engines for DCX actually ran out of engines for them and with the new EPA Regulations DCX told them to not worry bout making more since the KJ CRD wouldn't be allowed anyway. So they used up every single one of the CRD engines manufactured is what I'm getting at.

This is what my dealer told me back in February. Europe is the 'bread and butter' for the CRD, so the American market came second as far as allotment. Seems silly to me. If there is a market in America then add another shift at the CRD factory and sell the CRD here until December 31st. They didn't ask my opinion though....

DCX KILLS JEEP LIBERTY DIESEL. DaimlerChrysler AG says it will stop offering a diesel option for its Jeep Liberty compact SUV in the U.S. this fall because the engine can’t meet stricter federal emission rules coming next year. Demand for the diesel model is about twice what DCX
expected—some 11,000 sales since January 2005. But it says volumes aren’t high enough to justify the cost of cleaning up the 2.8-liter diesel, which is supplied by an affiliate in Italy.
Last week DCX trumpeted plans to introduce a dieselpowered Jeep Grand Cherokee midsize SUV next spring. That vehicle will use DCX’s 3-liter clean-diesel “Bluetec”
engine built by Mercedes-Benz.

DCX reportedly is considering clean-diesel engine options for the Liberty when the vehicle is redesigned for the 2008 model year.
