Post subject:  Rear Spring Pads

I've had the 02 in the shop for LBJs, got the Moog serviceables, and had 1/2" aluminum clevis spacers installed at the same time. Now I'd like to add a just a bit to the rear to level it back out. I've read about adding an extra spring isolator pad to the rear spring but I'm wondering do I add the tops or bottoms or does it not matter???

My KJ is a prelowered 02, has the longer springs. I'm not planning on any lift kits or anything but put in the clevis spacers cause it was a cheap way to get just a tad more space in the fenderwell for future tire upgrade.

I'm thinking of just using the DC (stock) pad for the rear but again, top or bottom?

top isolator, each one adds about 1/2 inch. I added 2 extra to each side(total 3). The tops are cheaper and stack together real well. Bought 4 online for about $30. total.

I've used the All J spacers also. I put two on each side to get an extra inch. They work great.

Not trying to divert the thread but did you fab the clevis spacers or pick them up somewhere?

I made them almost just like these: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... php?t=5217

Except I used 1/2" 6066 alumium and notched them for the stock strut locator key.

Anyone have a link to the allJ spacers? Can't find them.

You can always use the email or phone number from their website and talk to them directly to find out more.

Contact All J's. They have spacers that they designedfor leveling the KJ after a clevis lift. I bought them for $30 a pair. I used two pair to lift the rear an additional inch.

I just picked up a pair of the top pads from the dealer for $20. Now if I can find some time to put them in... Thanks again all!

Installed the pads today. It was super easy, took an hour. It would have taken much less time if we weren't eating pizza, drinking beer, and BSing the whole time. We jacked up the axle on one side, wrapped two small ratchet straps around the spring and snugged them down to hold the spring compressed, lowered the axle with a jack stand under the frame rail and pulled the spring. The pads stacked up nice and tight. We set the spring back in, jacked up the axle, took off the straps, and lowered the KJ to the ground. Repeat side two.

I made a pair of 1/2" aluminum clevis spacers a couple weeks ago and had them installed when I had my Moog LBJs installed so now I'm set. I gained 1.25" in front and 1" rear total at the rocker panel. The KJ is perfectly level at 14-1/2" at the bottom of the rocker front and rear. Given that my KJ is a pre-lowered '02 I'm sitting a bit higher than most stock KJs but not as high as most lift kits. I think it looks good but the SRA Goodyears look wimpy in there. I need to get some Moab wheels and BFGs. I parked next to a new CRD and that thing had almost no fender gap compared to mine, we both had the same tires/wheels.

I still need to address the bump stop issue up front to make up for the extended strut. My thought was to add a chunk of polyethylene to the top of the upper control arm where it contacts the bumpstop in order to stop the control arm before overcomressing the shock. I'll write a post with pics once I get the stops made and the pics organized.

What bumpstop are you talking about? I have no extended bumpstop with the ome lift.

You shouldn't need them if you have a coil/shock lift. I did my lift by adding a spacer under the strut (clevis lift). In stock form the upper control arm hits the bumpstop before the shock bottoms. With a clevis lift or spacer lift that extends the strut clevis/assembly the shock can bottom out before the upper arm hits the bumpstop because the shock length stays the same while the upper arm is lowered further away from the stop. This is much of the trouble with spacer lifts, they really should be sold with longer bumpstops to avoid bottoming and ruining shocks.

Think of it this way, with a spacer lift you are basically lowering the suspension away from the vehicle without changing the amount of travel. The bumpstops need to be lowered also or the suspension can travel up too high and bottom the shock. That's a non-issue with a coil/shock type lift where the suspension location stays the same while travel is lengthened.

Now my shocks may have enough extra travel to accomodate the 1/2" extra compression travel I added but I'd not like to find out the hard way that they don't.

I made them, cost me 5 bucks. I did almost exactly what AZoverdrive did in this thread: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=5217
