Ok, I got the sticking rear brake problem this week, I did some research on the internet and found that a lot ok KJ owners had this problem and a lot of dealers did not know how to fix it.
Often the dealers will only check or/and replace the rear calipers but this does often not help, I have read about KJ owners with smoking rear axels and even of crashes due to overheated rear axles/brakes.

I had my KJ in at a local brake specialist and he found the problem quite easely.

here is what happened:

My KJ became very sluggish and when I came to a halt it did not role, it felt like the handbrake was pulled on a bit, I got out to feel the rear axel and it was quite hot, I fiddled a bit with the handbreak handle and got it partly unstuck again.

Although the rear brakes are disks, the handbrakes are drum brakes, the mechanic found that the handbrake leaver which moves the brake pads in the handbrake drum was stuck, this leaver is made of two parts that move in a cissor kind of way and push out the pads.

This part was so stuck that he had to take them of and needed a blow torch to get them apart.
After creasing this part and cleaning the brakes the problem was solved.

Although it was about 3 hours of labour, we did not need any parts and my KJ drives like new again.

Hope this will help some of you out there with the same problem.

In my case both sides, but it could also be one of them.

If you find this out too late everything is burned including the calipers and the wrong clues can be taken.

I guess I must be dense! :oops: I have never seen a rig with both disks and drums on the same wheel, not sure how you could even do that. I suppose you could have one of those old fashioned hand brake on driveline deals but those don't much work and the bands are on the outside and squeeze in.

If you have a Liberty with both Drums and Disks on the rear I would like to see pictures. :wink: Maybe we are just talking the earlier Liberty with front disk and rear drums huh?

KJ's with rear disc brakes use a drum style parking brake using the disc hub for the drum.If you take your rear disc's off you will see a mini drum brake set-up which is your parking brake.

Noop!, you have to take the wheel off, disk and drum is one unit, same set up as some GM cars.

yea, AND THEY SUCK! Mine were stuck on for some unknown amount of time and it just cost me some $$ to replace them. Not to mention burned fuel economy.

And now, the parking brake barely catches. It's back at my mechanic's tonight so he can replace my new pads and new rotor with new pads and new rotor after my old caliper froze friday night. (long story posted elsewhere here).

But yes, those stupid parking brakes stink! I'll be taking them all apart after each mud trip from now on!

AH HA!!!

I knew there was something wrong, i just couldn't figure it out. I took it to the dealer a while back after some lady stopped me on the street and said "hey, your wheel is smoking" The dealer couldn't find anything and couldn't replicate the problem, so off i went, none the wiser. A few weeks ago, it started acting up again, so i decided to temp everything.

Front Left: Front Right:
Rotor: 154* Rotor: 170*
Wheel: 109* Wheel: 110*
Caliper: 129* Caliper: 156*

Rear Left: Rear Right:
Rotor: 185* Rotor: 430*+??? (it was out of range for the gauge)
Wheel: 129* Wheel: 214*
Caliper: 245* Caliper: 293*

Needless to say, something is wrong, you could hear it clicking and poping as it cooled and see the heat ripples coming off of it, you couldn't even keep your hand on the WHEEL, let alone the caliper or the rotor. So this was the second time. It still hasn't acted up since then, but now that brake squeaks every now and then, i guess i'll print out this thread and take it into their service dept. to see what they say. Do you think this issue could be causing my squeaking?

I use my parking brake maybe once a year! :wink: Might make the problem better or worse.

i use mine almost every time i park on a fairly steep slope, i use it whenever i put the truck up on ramps to cahnge the oil as well...

I used to use my parking brake every time until the interior lever broke and was replaced under warranty ($300+ otherwise!). Sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't.

Anyway, with temps like that, and such huge differences front to rear, I'd say something is sticking. Either your parking brake shoes or your calipers.

I will say this, after everything I just went through with my rear brakes friday, I'll be doing those brake jobs myself from now on as it's SO easy to do. You can buy new rotors every time and still be cheaper than paying someone to do it. Hell, even the newly rebuilt caliper was only $55!

As for the parking brake, I'm trying not to use it except for extreme off roading when I need to help the trak-lock along. And when I'm done off roading, I'm going to jack up the rear and spin the tires to be sure nothing is hanging up or dragging.

YOU SHOULD DO THAT NOW, BTW.
