My family had a couple of Eagles - I think the Cherokee shares a lot of parts including the straight six....

Subaru created a whole car line around the idea of the Eagle. Chrysler just didn't get it.

Well, they tried with the "eagle" brand, but it had no off-road value and was mostly just based on Mitsu and other import platforms.

AMC Eagle 4x4's were made out of the same model 4x2's of that year. They were standard cars with an IFS & a single speed X-fer (easily adapted to a 2-spd). As this was before Chryco absorbed AMC, I don't think AMC had any direct links to Mitsu. They may well have Mitsu parts, but this is the first I have heard of it.

The Engine was AMC, the auto tranny was whatever AMC was buying at the time, probably a torqueflight, the rear end was AMC, and all of the other components ( P/S, electronics) were the same as other AMC/jeep parts of the same year. The Eagle was a model in the AMC line-up, & should not to be confused with Eagle when, a few years later, Chryco formed a new car line called Eagle whose models were the Vision, Talon, etc... The Talon was a rebadged Mitsu & did have an AWD version, geared toward performance. The Vision was an Intrepid. They had nothing to do with AMC Eagles at all. The AMC eagles were decendents of the AMC Hornet.

I don't think Subaru is really flourishing in either sales or dependability. They fill a niche market. Even here, where there are about 750,000 people & we get some winter weather, there is only one small dealership and it also sells motorcycyles and ATV's. When AMC attempted the same market, it just was not profitable.
