yeah defenders are outrageously priced here in the states. They still make them in the UK, and they are cheap... we can only dream, instead land rover america AKA FORD is loosing a market, small potatoes I guess.

Great pictures :) I love Jeeps and Landrovers (they are the REAL offroaders in my book) ...... used to have a defender and will probably buy one again. They're about £1500 for one to bang about offroad.

You could buy a brand new LR3 for that ...

good point, id like to see a nice LR3 built up....i have yet to. I dont think they're as popular here in America as the Discovery.

I don't know about the LR3. Every LR3 I've seen in SoCal has this ... track thing running down the bottom. No idea what it is, but it's very low. It seems to me you'd have to seriously lift it to get any kind of ground clearance.

Well, the new Land Rovers aren't what the older ones are. With Ford at the helm--- be very scared. Think of what happend to Volvo, worse yet Jaguar. The "FreeStyle" or whatever it is, is a total joke. The LR3 is designed to replace the Discovery. The LR3 is very capable, however. Due to the horendous price tag of new LR3's (mid 40's) and RR's (75k) -- dont look for anyone to wheel new ones except the rich and insane.

Note that Rovers are airbag suspended. This gives them an excellent ride and is the reason they look low when parked or going down the highway. In this case, what you see is not what you get. If you see a new RR going down the interstate-- it is low to the ground. As the car slows down- or engages lower gears-- the suspension raises 4 inches or so and gives maximum clearance. You get the best of both worlds--on road better handling and fuel mileage, and off road supple suspension with great clearance. That is, until the system goes out and you end up stuck with a 3000-6000 repair bill.

Also, when you high center the rover- it has an extra half inch or so of emergency clearance that it will pulse through in rapid succession to try and rock you off an obstacle. High tech. We had an old RR (94). What a beast. That thing rocked and would go up stuff that I just could not believe-- without ever spinning a wheel. But those RR need massive amounts of maintenance. Parts are sometimes sketchy and pricy.

Pablo is sadly correct. Want to see the real land rover:

Camel Trophy

that's how they used to sell em. Well now camel trophy is gone and they replace it with this G(ay)4 Challenge.

LR3 is nothing like the old disco sadly. It has controlls that you tell it what you are driving on and it adjusts, like sand, it changes gearing and you go, rocks, it raises clearence goes to "low-range" and you go, highway, lowers all the way. Great and all but how much articulation you going to get out of a IFS/IRS anyhow. Besides what do you do when your system fails you in the middle of no where. Naw, I will keep with my simple coil over thank you. Thanks Ford! @$#%.

oh by the way, d1 with 100k had it 2 1/2 years done regular maintenance on time and only thing i've had to replace is a cv joint i broke wheeling on tip over challenge. Replacement part $80 took 30 mins to swap out, on mine way. Parts are plenty just have to know where to look and ‘wheeling’ to wrench ;).

The Discoverys are nice; wouldn't mind having one myself. But when I think of Land Rover, this is what is always in my mind: 1970 Series III Land Rover It just shouts 'African Safari!' 8)
