Hey guys,

What up KJ West! Miss you SoCal guys!

Ok enough of that, Went wheeling for the first time (not work related) with the local 4x4 club. We went out to Knik Glacier, but had to turn back a little early due to minor waterway... Here's a few pics and the rest are on the link at the bottom.

Here's the group at the beginning of the trail. Yes, that's a 15 pax van.

First creekcrossing...

Getting closer to the glacier, but we didn't make it all the way.

Attempt to cross the river. He made it, but the rest of us didn't.

The van got stuck in the river. Took a lot of work and winches to get him out.

Just a cool picture...

Here's the rest (so long as the link works)

The van and the YJ were our guinea pigs to try to find a way across the river. The ice ledge and the water itself was deeper then we expected, so when the van tried to get out, but couldn't get up over the legde. We even tried sending him down river, but he started floating a bit so we brought him back. When he tried again I'm not sure if it was torque (I actually doubt that) or the driveline hitting the ice (That's what I think) but it snapped in 1/2. So we hooked a winch to him and he only had front wheel drive, but then his tie rod broke too. This was not his day. But when all was said and done we had 6 winches (mine, 9000 lbs was snatch blocked as well) so we had a good 50000 lbs pulling him - it occured to us that something was wrong and realized his driveshaft was digging into the ice. Once that was taken care of he came out fairly easily.

I downloaded some better pics of the carnage and some that show how deep this river was that other people took, I'll pop those up as well. The guy drove out... well, slowly, which was pretty impressive.

JJ, you're just a wuss!

Polly, It's only a few days drive...

Wuss? I did my time in Alaska. Lived there for 5 years and while I loved it, I'm not a big fan of winters anymore. The summers up there can't be beat though.

Oh man I am soooo jealous. I love winter wheelin cause it is truely all about you and your machine, if it breaks and you can't get home, you're in deep trouble. I love a good challenge.
