Post subject:  Land Cruiser Diesel Build
I own a CRD but it just is a bit small for my liking so I bought a 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser with factory lockers to convert to diesel. I've had the LC for over a year now building it up to get ready for the diesel. I decided to go with a Cummins 6bt 12v out of a 97 Dodge Ram. I am also putting in a 5 speed NV4500 trans, also out of a 97 Dodge diesel. I head out Monday to drive to Portland, OR to Jonesy's Offroad where the conversion will take place.
In addition to the diesel I am converting to part time 4wd from the stock full time by putting in a split case transfer case from a 60 series Land Cruiser. I have already installed 80 series Aisin hubs which came on the Land Cruisers in the rest of the world. The US is always deprived from the good stuff.
Here are some photos of the LC. I will update when the shop starts the work.

Plenty of aftermarket support for Land Cruisers. Not as much as Wranglers but way more than the KJ. It was about the same cost to build the LC as it was my CRD. Basically the same type accessories on both. I noticed pretty quick that quality of accessories are much better in the Toyota world than Jeep world.

Looks great, CIMARRON13! I've always loved the two-tone bed-liner-on-body look, but I'm too chicken to do my CRD (don't want to mess it up).

It's not hard. Just a lot of prep before spraying. I will be doing the CRD since I have plenty left over. Need to fill the holes on the rocker first. I ripped off the molding when I put on the sliders.

Here's the Cummins 12V 6bt that will be transplanted into the cruiser. Still about a month out before install starts. I have a plethora of parts to get still. My goal is to get it ready for late summer trip to Colorado.

Dang...I want that 6BT for my ancient RV :evil:


It's a '73 Class A - 20' - with a Dodge 440 and LoadFlite 727 (truck version on both). I just think a 6BT would be perfect in that vehicle.

I got the newer top plate for the NV4500 in along with shifter housing and BD diesel short throw shifter. Will find out if the shift lever needs to be modified once installed. I also ordered a twin stick kit for the 60 series split case. I wanted to keep the 2WD low range option that I had with the CDL switch/pin 7 mod previously. These are the last bit of the parts I will get. I will leave it up to Jonesy's to get the rest once the conversion starts.

Conversion has taken longer than expected but things are looking good to have it running by the end of the year. Here is the progress so far.

I also just picked up this Lexus LX 450 for $1,500. The good it has factory front and rear lockers and is clean and dent free. Also identical to my 80 series so it's a perfect parts vehicle for future needs. The bad it has a blown head gasket but I will be dropping in the original engine from the Land Cruiser to give it life again. It will be the kid hauler that way the Land Cruiser can stay in expo mode full time.

Build has been slow lately. Added a 1" body lift for hood clearance and exhaust routing. Right now we are waiting on the inter cooler to show up for install. Still need to cut hole for TC shifters. All drive lines and clutch stuff is done. Hoping to have it ready in a month.

Nice. Can't believe you can get a nice complete vehicle with a blown engine for 1500, here it would be 2-3 times that for that and beat up too.

It only took a year of checking CL everyday and missing good deals many times. It was listed for $2,500. Most of these Land Cruisers were owned by soccer moms who had no idea what the dial (front and rear lockers) on dash did. Locked axles alone go for $1,500 to $2,000 for the pair so it made the purchase pretty easy on my part.

Thanks. One more week and I will finally be driving it. It's been over a year, over budget, unforeseen issues, but overall I couldn't be happier. Only issue now to be addressed is during test drives the shop said my heater core started leaking. Big pain in the booty job for when I get it home. The whole dash has to come out to replace it. Also I have to drive across the country with no AC. I told the shop to not recharge the system since I have to discharge it to get to the heater core. Would have been a waste of money and I am all out of that at the moment. Although the sweet sound of the diesel will hopefully keep me smiling the whole way home.

Shop is claiming that they are seeing around 20MPG with their test drives. I have my doubts that it will be that high. Originally I hoped to achieve 17-18mpg which would be a 50% increase from what I was getting. Either way for a 6,000lb+ brick that isn't bad as all.
