In North America we didn't get Toyota diesel option. Only gas so parts all have to come from overseas. I did use a Toyota clutch pedal.  Had it shipped over from Japan.

Picked up the cruiser today. Put alittle over a hundred miles on it. Would of done more but I am wore out from work over the weekend. It's awesome to drive. It was hard to keep it at 65 which is the speed I usually drive at. It wants to go. Still working on learning the tranny and clutch. Started off in 2nd gear most of time due to 1st gear on the NV4500 is a granny gear. Gobs of torque. Starting in 1st feels like stock 4LO. Drove with windows down and at highway speed no noticeable noise. Trip had 274 miles when I filled up. Most of that was still test drives. Put 15.292 gallons in at $3.59 for B20. Gas was $3.87. That's money right in my pocket. To bad it's the opposite in Texas.

Here are my MPG numbers so far. 19.4 b20 21.2 #2 19.7 #2 20.1 #2 w/ Diesel Kleen additive Before conversion I averaged 11.5 on my normal driving. I averaged 13.7 when I drove the truck to Portland. My guess would be I see 16-17 on my normal driving now. Not bad at all. In Moab at the moment. Will do a bit of playing around, mainly testing the front suspension. Right now it is not as stiff as I would like it. Yesterday I drive a bit on some BLM land and put it in 4WD and it was waaay soft up front. |

You will need to change the front Coils to HD for Diesel assuming the Cummins engine is as heavy as the Toyota engine. OLD MAN EMU ones are very good for Toyota. |

I had OME heavies on before my present springs. The problem with the OME lifts is they don't get you high enough. I needed 4" to clear the oil pan. Cummins is about 300lbs heavier than the Toyota. Another issue is the ARB bumper sticks out a bit far with the winch. Going to try another bumper that is a little more snug. |

Found some 4" OME competition springs to put in the front. Much better ride now. A lot stiffer. Also gains a little over an inch which got leveled everything out front to rear. Also swapped out the ARB front bumper for a Slee bumper. It helped tuck the winch a bit closer and shed about 20lbs from the front.

I have done a few modifications since my last post. Installed filter minder. I don't want to change out the high dollar filters before it' time.  Installed red LED lights in the dash.  Made a bracket to finally install my Vaiair compressor underneath where the spare used to be.  And a few shots from my recent trip to Big Bend National Park.

Lol nice ... I'm a Toyota guy so it's good to read 80 builds on a jeep site... I've got a 77 fj40 and a 92 fj80 ... Good motor for that ! I think you'll like the out come, we built a buddy's rig , fj40 shortened , on a fj 60 frame with a fj45 pickup bed , on 40's with a 4tb motor.... Straight beast! What are future plans? James |

James Love the Cummins. I just did some power upgrades(fuel plate, AFC spring, 4K governor springs, and HD valve springs) and it really woke it up. I have actually been debating whether or not to ditch the CRD and get another LC. Been looking for 40's but can't find one that fits the bill. Plus I would want to make it diesel and funds are there right now spending so much on the 80. No gas vehicles are in the driveway at the moment so I want to keep it that way. Even the wife has a Jetta TDI now. |

Been awhile since I've added to my thread here. I notice some new views so here is the latest. I did some power upgrades to the engine. Added 4K governor springs so now the Cummins will fuel to 4,000 rpms rather than defueling around 2,200 rpms. New springs (right in photo) compared to stock springs.  With the new governor springs in it was time to upgrade to HD valve springs and retainers. New springs (right) compared to stock springs.   Now for the real power upgrades. New fuel plate along with AFC housing spring. New fuel plate (right) compared to stock plate. The added about 50hp and 100lbs of torque.  With these upgrades the Cummins is a beast. It really woke it up. I did all the work myself which took about two days of leaning over the engine taking my time to make sure everything was done right. I also adjusted the valves after installing the new ones. The 12v Cummins is so easy to work on even though its crammed in the Land Cruiser. |

I also added a 63Q EdgeStar fridge freezer in the back. My plan is to leave in running in the vehicle at all times that way I always have cold beverages for everyday commuting or camping. With this plan I needed power at all times so I installed a NOCO Genius Gen2 dual battery charger in the engine bay plus a plug in the bumper for providing shore power when available. New fridge taking over for my ice chest that has been with me for over 10 years. Going to miss my collection of stickers. The fridge also has a safety and will shut of if the battery gets bellow 10.5 volts. I still need to isolate my second battery just in case. Right now my batteries are running in parallel.     Since I was drilling a 2" hole in the bumper I added another outlet for the block heater. Wanted to keep it symmetrical.  Now for when camping where I can't get shore power I added a Morningstar PS-15 solar charge controller. Now I just need to decide which solar panel will be mounted on the roof rack. Probably 100W. I like this controller because it tells me battery volts, charging amps, and load amps.  To power my fridge, solar charger, air compressor and a few USB and 12v outlets I installed I added a fuse panel to the rear. I ran 4g wire from the battery along with a circuit breaker at the battery.  I have four day trip out to Big Bend in a few weeks and am looking forward to trying out the solar setup and fridge. No more buying ice and having soggy food! |

A couple photos from Big Bend this past weekend. I got to test my fridge/freezer and solar setup as well. Set the fridge at 35 degrees and left it on for 4 days. No problems with battery drain at all. I installed a 100w solar panel flat on the roof and saw 4.5 amps during peak sun. Around .5 amps during the morning and late afternoon. I need to figure out a way to angle it toward the sun when parked for better morning and afternoon charging.

you figure out yet where the panel is being mounted??? your not the only one that has a solar panel... mines on my roof. it is a 4.5 foot long panel. pumps out after my modification to it and after the charge controller modifies the delivery, its 350 watts. its not your typical panel, its a 130 volt panel I got brand new from a family friend. the modification to it was taking the two panel rails and running them in parallel for 60 volts, my charge controller also is not your typical controller. can handle up to 100 volts and 250 watts. I usually have light loads to mine, just lights and fans, rarely does the inverter go on. |

Time to rebuild the transfer case and install 2.88:1 low range and .92:1 high range gears. Since I didn't get it rebuilt when installed I was getting a whine that was starting to get annoying. After tearing it down I hopefully found the culprit. I had a lot of wear on my idler shaft as well as a bad o ring resulting in a leak between the TC and transmission. Most of the 30 year old gaskets and seals were toast. No lift, besides the 4" lift on the truck, so laying on the creeper was the only way to go.  Use the cup method to neatly drain the TC into the bucket.  Back half of the case off. Toyota used a split case in the 40 & 60 series Land Cruisers.  Worn out idler shaft has seen better days.  TC completely removed showing the rear trans and AA adapter.  And finally a mostly dismantled transfer case.  Now I have to wait on the gear which are coming from Australia. Would have liked to had everything ready but I needed to tear it down to figure out which input gear was needed since their are two versions. |

It's amazing how fast my gears are getting here from Australia. I should start the cleaning this Sunday and start rebuilding the case on Monday.

Everything back together and running great. RPMs are down on the highway and my low range is even lower so I'm happy.
