 I use diesel too to heat my house and water for the shower. Its not the same stuff as we put in our cars, they say it's less refined.

Could try if my wife's car runs on it, its only 0.58€ at the moment... :D

In Denmark they say it's the same stuff they put in both tanks. Only difference is that they color the diesel used for home heating. If you get caught driving by burning diesel for home heating they will fine you heavily - well that's in Denmark, and we go a long way to penalize peoples wallet if they screw up.

they have road checks here where they dip your tank to see what colour diesel you have, you could de driving somewhere and see a row of trucks ,commerical 4x4 pulled in to be checked and normally have few cops cars with them in case you make a run for it

I think it´s the very same stuff - well here anyway, but the one you heat your houses with and drive your agricultural machinery, is less taxed, called paraffine.
The fact is, there´s been a number of characters trying to drive their diesels with paraffine and got caught and had to pay the diesel taxes several times over.
I´ve heard, there´s some marking additive to point out, whether the stuff is paraffine - it smells quite different than diesel.
A very small amount of paraffine mixed in your diesel tank will change the smell.
I´ve no idea, how this goes in other EU countries, but be careful, if it would be the same, we have in Finland :!:

Red diesel, heavy oil (aka heating oil), marine diesel (orange) and derv all were the same (apart from colour).

Changes in emmisions legislation have meant that the road diesel now has less sulphur to make it cleaner for the environment, although performance and mpg is reduced, so more is used!

I believe some (if not all) modern emmision controlled diesel engines (Euro4?) will not run on red diesel due to the higher level of sulphur (clogs up the particulate filter).

On my recent trip to France, I was paying 1.25e (94p/L). Back home, the price was £1.14p/L.

I am seriously looking for a Liberty with LPG already fitted, but they are rare (I have only seen one for sale), but I expect the price will rise similar to petrol as the government tries to get more money from us poor motorists.
