 Post subject: Kelticknights old brush guard...and a front hitch!

Since you loose your towpoints when you fit a brushguard I was kinda lost, I wanted a Westin style brushguard because it looks good, Kelticknight had one laying about and gave it to me, (many thanks again fot that! :P) so I had to think of something or not fit it..

Some A bars let you have both but not the Westin, the mount plates use the towhook bolt holes.

So I got a 'Hidden Hitch' front hitch to solve that problem. But..that doesn't fit. Darn. The hitch is wider then the brush guard mounts. :mad:

Anybody know why there's a bolt in the middle of the hitch? I welded the thing together, seems like a week point. First I thought it may be there to take it apart and fit it without taking of the front bumper but that doesn't work because the support plate bolts go in the chassis and so you need to take of the bumper anyway.

Since UPS lost one of my brushguard mount plates I had to fab one up

looks well tony on your kj,it was a easy fit , and protect the front well specilayy going through bushy forest areas,friend of mine got me the ARB bumper unit,price was right so got it,noticed i lost 4 mpg because of its weight and the 16,000 winche, :(
but worth it ,have pulled alot of 4x4 out of trouble

Looks good, you can even see where your KJ ends, that's handy when parking in a thight spot.
The only thing you need now is some decent tyres as your KJ looks like Rambo on ballet shoes :wink:

yep you're right Dutchy, my higway rated tires look like crap. They still hold some decent thread on them so I'll run them for a little while longer ( change tires every year) and then get Cooper S/T ATR's. :twisted:

get bf goodrich all trains,they the buiz
cost few quid more but last longer,and stick to road and track

AMEN TO THAT!

BFG's are great, good gripp on and off road, they have low noise levels, protected side walls and they look great under the KJ.

Only make sure you always change all 4 of them at the same time or your KJ will drive like a overloaded 2CV.

got set of them last year and best tyres i have got for my kj
where few notes extra but you get one and half times more wear if not more off them
as dutchy says,the grip is unbeleivable,where other tyre would slide,the bf stuch to road or dirt,you notice difference straight away
just my 2 cents

Since al we do is crawl over ( sharp! ) rocks I want these Coopers, they have a S/T C version of which they say it's extra strong specialy designed for that purpose..

Hi Tony,

I like your brushguard and I'm thinking of getting the same one for my Jeep.
It looks as it fits in the bumper and not underneath like most bullbars do, am I right?
I hate to lose aproach angle and I think your brushguard will deal with that as it does not goes underneath the little front spoiler.

I found the same brushguard on e-bay for £149

I just have a couple of questions, how easy is it to fit, do you think it will be possible to weld an extra bar straight in front of the grill and is it strong enough to protect the Cherokee from a 200kg deer?

I had a near miss with a full size deer this week and I need to strengthen the front end.
Up here in the Highlands if you hit a dear and it takes out the engine and electrical power you could be in real trouble especially at night withour mobile phone cover.

Mind you, I drive very slow at night and i'm watching the road and surrounding area like a hawk but even than if a deer jumps out is is often just luck if you don't hit it.

hi duchy,i had that brushguard ,it protected againest a small truck so i say its ok,you can weld extra bars if you need,as far as fitting,takes about 30 to 35 mins to fit,has instructions with it

Hiya Dutchy,

Yes this front guard is one heavy sturdy thing. It mounts to where your tow hooks are fitted, meaning the support plates are fitted to the steel beam which runs behind the bumper. The main body ( the grey bits ) of the brushguard are made 4 mm steel, you can weld another car to that. Fitting is easy, you do not have to take of the front bumper. Take a look underneath and you will se your tow hook fitted with 2nuts an a bolt. That's where the brush guard hooks up to.

I'd say you can hit a 300kg wild hog ( common over in my country ) without any damage to the car.

Keltick pushed another 4x4 out of the mud with mine..(when it was still on his car :D )

I had one hell of a time straithening it out after Keltick hit I don't know what. Probably the van?

To see the deer sooner...maybe ad some 100W lights to it?

Good to know it is a sturdy piece of kit, I could probably weld/bold on some towhooks besides welding an extra bar in front of the grill.

it pushed a 4x4 at one time and another pushed a truck so its good :D and now i have a ARB Bumper and i can push anything :wink:
might get armour plate next :D
