hi there
have noticed lately, that when taking off,its more smokie ,when changing gears or picking up speed ,has had regular services,on second timing belt change, has 150,000 miles on clock, has a 2.5 vmi engine, not buring oil, only black smoke
was suggested could be injectors need cleaning,
if i change injectors,where can i get besides dealer,maybe a link
any ideas

Hi,

Couldn't you simply use some injector cleaner?

I am just suggesting this cause 4 years back I had to change a faulty injector and they were 500EUR each(from the dealership), luckily the guys did it under warranty even though it had ran out a couple of months before.

Have your injectors checked at a BOSCH service station first.

http://www.bosch.ie/content/language1/html/index.htm

A mate of mine had 2 bad ones in his KJ after only 120k Km.... :? But I'm afraid you'll have to travel to Dublin..maybe give them a call?

EGR problems are more common on 05+ models. And you have yours disconnected right? ( took of the little vacuum hose...)

Have you checked your airfilter?

Boost pressure sensor on the 2.5 crd, about halfway down the page:

havent the egr solinad disconnected,,do you have a link to show the mod to it,would it make any difference

the air filter is clean,i use a k&n filter ,gets clean regularly, every 5000 miles

only smokes when changing gears or hard on foot picking up speed,grey/black smoke

what type of injectors are in 2.5 crd, electronic or ??

EGR mod:

http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36579

And we use the BOSCH SD3 (or something like that) injection system.

So everything is made by BOSCH. Luckaly not by JEEP. So you can go to a BOSCH car service.

The injectors are electronically controlled.

Grey / black smoke when under stress would mean unburned fuel / to much fuel...so probably one of the injectors is shot.

Over here the stealer wanted 1200€ to change 2 on my mates car.

I send him to a BOSCH garage and they did it for 600€

Think Tony might be right ,with the symptoms you have it sounds like an iffy injector or more than one.

we clean the injectors ,they are bosch
not sure waht else to try, depating if i buy new injectors, will it make any difference
is it possible its getting too much air because of snorkel as using a k&n air filter with it,woulda normal filter be any different

More smoke on startup is normally oil seeping past rings ,or it can be turbo related.

Hmm...difficult one. I know you already changed to a stock airfilter..Might try rotating the intake on the snorkel so it faces backwards and you do not get the 'ram air' intake effect.

But I doubt it will help much.

Did you change gas stations? Some diesel is better then others.

Do you get the 'special' diesel in Ireland?

You know, like the V power and G force and whatever they are called.

Bit more expensive, but try a tank and see if it helps out...

What you could also try is empty out the katalyc converter. Here's what you do: Drive till engine is at normal temp. Then put it in 2nd gear and drive around 70/80 km p/h so engine revs are high. Keep this up for about 5 minutes.

You may find that you leave a trail of black smoke for the first 2 minutes. You are now pumping out all the residu...

Come to think of it, didn't you have your timing belt replaced not so long ago? Did the smoking start shortly after?

Then I'd check my camshaft timing....

hey tony
it was was smoking before timing belt change, was hoping it would cure it.as far as diesel stations go,they all the same,no special diesel
all shell and staoil stations here are owned now by a company called topaz,,no special diesel either
funny a month after fitting a snorkel,i started to get signs of more smokie than normal,it runs good, not burning any more juice than normal
just smoke anyone in my rear when taking off and changing gears, doent happen any other time

was going to open up egr valve,we did a test by blowing into one of hoses comming from egr solinid and seem to open and close ok as we could hear it
will give it a shot tomorrow with cat, getting a service in a month, the mech said he can put a little petrol into the fuel filter system to see if it blow out any crap

Noooo, don't put any petrol in you CRD! Not even a little bit!

The high pressure pump is a very sensitive part that cannot run even 2 seconds without proper lube!

That is old school mechanics, when we had rotating indirect injection pumps!

The EGR is vacuum operated, so blowing into the hose doesn't do anything, you probably hear the membrane in the actuating valve go 'cloink'.

You need to suck on that line. Not blow in it.

Ok, so after you fitted the snork you got black smoke...hmm...This could mean you have to little air going into the engine...

Black smoke is unburned fuel. Therefore I said check the injectors, which you already did. Try a test run ( not to far!) without an air filter.

See if it changes. By fitting a snorkel you made the intake route longer so the engine needs to work 'harder' to suck in clean air.

What I have seen of the snorks is that it narrows as it goes along the fender and has a not so big diametre pipe going into the airbox..

Try that, maybe it will stop smoking...

And another idea...clean your intercooler. You can flush it with diesel fuel, but you will have to take it out first.

Why? Turbo's always leak a little oil. You've seen that with your OEM turbo hoses and inside the Samco's. That oil will settle inside the intercooler. Making it less effective. If the hot air coming from the turbo isn't cooled enough you get to little mass of air going into the intake of the engine. Causing..black exhaust smoke.

he sucked it too,,then he took the hoses off the egr solinid and attached together ,taking out the egr solinid out of the line but made no difference,we put it a computer ,it showed 2 injector blocked alittle ,every thing else was normal with 150,000 miles wear

was debating changing exhaust system, or just getiing new injectors even doe all ok

Ok, so then if you can get your injectors 100% first.

And I highly recommend keeping the no EGR mod. Although it is not to environmental friendly..
