Ok this is going to be short and sweet for right now. I will expand it in a couple of days

First, Tools needed
Image

First using the pick tool, push out the center of the 2 pom rivets that secure the rear of the fender flare to the bumper

Image

Next remove the 3 fasteners that hold the splash guard to the bumper. They pop open like this

Image

Now move the splash guard behind the tire and remove the 10mm bolt that is located by the turn signal

Move to the front of the KK and remove the 2 push pin style fasteners that are located by the P/S cooler

Image
Image

Once those are gone cut the pom rivets that secure the splash guard to the bumper

Image
Image

Now comes the hard part. There are 3 butterfly plastic spring clips that hold the front of the flare to the bumper. If you snake your hand behind the bumper from the bottom, you can release the bottom one. Once you get that one, either use a small pick and try to release each finger on the other two, or use a small pich and try to release the clip from the flare. If you do the latter of the two, depress the little nubs and push the clip towards the rear of the KK.

After you reach this point, you are almost done. Now move to one side of the bumper and pull on the bumper while moving the flare out of the way. Release the turn signal wire and marker light wires and pull the bumper out to the point that it is clear of the flare. Repeat for the other side. Now just wiggle the bumper back and forth till the bottom clips release and you are done.

Good workup, wouldn't it be just as easy to replace the pop-rivets with 7/16ths push pin reuseable rivets similar to what is used from splashguard to bumper?

I replaced all of mine on my KJ with them and they hold tight :D

ps- what's that cushy mess you got layin on the ground next to the tire, you weenie.. :P

you could but the pom rivets hold ever thing together tighter than the push pin style reuseable rivets

I dunno about that, i had one side of my flares on with pop rivets and one side on with the push pin type similar to what holds the fascia on just larger

the pin type were tighter

I am talkin about the kind that has the pin in the middle you press in not the feathered body moulding style

it may just depend on how much wallow is in the mounting holes

if ya use plastic pop rivets like what came OEM, then youll need a rivet gun to put new ones in since you have to cut the head off of some of them for the removal, theres certain places in the attachment that uses non-reuseable rivets instead of reuseables, kind of a pita

Just thought this might help the write up since I ran into this when taking off the bumper for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

In the picture I have circled the 3 clips as I found it difficult just locating them.
Also, more importantly, I circled one more spot that there is a screw that I didn't see mentioned in the original write-up that goes through that metal bracket hole I circled and screws into the bumper on each side. Maybe that was added in 2009.

Thanks for the picture thought. That was one thing that I spaced out when I did the write up....

I could not get the three butterfly spring clips that hold the fender onto the bumper back on. On either side.

Thinking about going to a body shop for an estimate on putting the bumper back on correctly, with new Pom rivets, with everything nice and tight. Can't be that much $$

First make sure all six of those butterfly clips are inserted correctly into the flares. Then put your bumper back on, starting at the top. Slide the clips in under the grille, push until they engage. Then lay on your back and connect the three clips under the radiator. The flares should just snap back into the bumper. Connect wiring harnesses and 10mm bolts at the turn signals. Reattach the wheel well liner to flares with reusable rivets. At the bottom of the bumper, those 'christmas tree' connectors can be replaced with zip ties.

Hi, i'm looking to remove my bumper this weekend to install my tie hooks. I want to make sure I have everything I need before I start. As such could someone tell me what size the rivets are so I buy the corrects one to replace the bumper after. Thanks

I cut the OEM rivets off to remove the bumper and replaced them with these fasteners:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Dorman-AutoGrade-GM-Ford-Chrysler-splash-shield-retainer/_/N-25ud?itemIdentifier=988380_0_0_
They can be had for cheap at an auto parts store and for a bit more at the Jeep dealer. I've had the bumper off several times for various reasons and am glad I used fasteners that are reusable rather than rivets.

I replaced the plastic pop rivets that I had to cut off with these or something like them (3rd one on that site you linked to above):
