Post subject:  HOW TO: PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT
REAR DRUM IN HAT PARK BRAKE (ROTOR INSTALLED) USING ADJUSTING TOOL
Adjustment can be made with a standard brake gauge or with adjusting tool . Adjustment is performed with the complete brake assembly installed on the backing plate.


1. Be sure parking brake lever is fully released.
2. Raise vehicle so rear wheels can be rotated freely.
3. Remove plug from each access hole in brake support plates.
4. Insert adjusting tool through support plate access hole and engage tool in teeth of adjusting screw star wheel .




5. Rotate adjuster screw star wheel (move tool handle upward) until slight drag can be felt when wheel is rotated.
6. Push and hold adjuster lever away from star wheel with thin screwdriver.
7. Back off adjuster screw star wheel until brake drag is eliminated.
8. Repeat adjustment at opposite wheel. Be sure adjustment is equal at both wheels.
9. Install support plate access hole plugs.
10. Lower vehicle.
11. Apply park brake hand lever and make sure park brakes hold the vehicle stationary.
12. Release park brake hand lever.

FYI,

The star wheels inside the wheel hub are the best way to adjust the emergency/parking brake tension. They can be accessed through a hole in the back of the hub, which is located directly behind the brake caliper bracket. I have found it is easier to get to with the brake calipers & bracket off, but you might have a shot at turning the star wheels blindly if you know where they are.

The diagram Diggerfreek posted is from a KJ, and their adjustment hole is located at the bottom of the hub (6:00 position). Not so on the KK. It is at the 9:00 or 3:00 position, on the side towards the front end of the Jeep.

This is a shot of the passengers side rear hub, with the front of the Jeep to the right.

On the driver's side the star wheel (yellow arrow) will be at the bottom of the cylinder, instead of the top. The access hole (red arrow) has a rubber plug in it that must be removed before you can get to the star wheel.

Either way, with a screwdriver thru the hole in the back of the hub, rotate the star wheel in towards the axle to create more e-brake tension, or out towards the rim to reduce the tension. Both wheels should be adjusted the same.

Thanks for posting this Diggerfreek.
I've adjusted the parking brakes before on vehicles with drums before so it's a bit familiar but I kinda forgot the details.

The very first time that I tried to replace my rear rotors I couldn't get the "top hat" brake rotors off. If I had thought of it I would have tried to back off the park brake adjustment.
It was probably holding the rotors on.

I just tried to adjust my ebrakes without success. Either the ebrakes drag too much or not at all.
Next I'm going to try replacing the ebrakes shoes and hardware.

I have adjusted parking brake at the wheels yet still have no braking action at the handle, all the way up but no stop. I've seen the '97 liberty adjustment under console cuddy but my 2008 auto tranny is very different, dealer wants $200 to look, $500 to fix, $ays you have to take seats, console, carpets out to service, anybody have any experience with this?

You don't have to dismantle your Jeep that much to access the adjustment nut on the E-brake handle. The very first time that I replaced my rear brakes I couldn't remove my rotors so I dismantled the centre console to reach the nut but I don't think that's your issue KK defjeeper. Likely the E-brake hardware is seized.
I had to completely dismantle mine and reassemble it with lots of NeverSieze.

I had the same experience after doing my rear brakes. What you need to do is pump the handle when going in reverse to get the self-adjusters to readjust. Mine took about 10-15 times of rolling back down the driveway before it would hold my jeep when in gear. You should feel the handle getting harder and harder to pull. Just make sure you keep your foot over the brake in case the park brake isn't enough :mrgreen:
