Oil Change

First off let me say that I am pretty mechanically inclined and have worked on and built many cars over the years. Today,I changed the oil in my wife's 2010 KK. Its a pretty straight forward job, but let me just say what in the heck was Jeep thinking when they decided where to place the oil filter. darn that thing is hard to get to. I had to remove the stock skid plates just to be able to reach the filter. PAIN IN THE BUTT!

Secondly, I was wondering if anyone has ran into this problem. The filter the auto parts store gave me was shorter then the original oil filter. After believing it was the wrong filter and checking with two different parts stores it turns out it was the right filter according to Fram. Anyone got any info about this.

Its easy if you have scrawny arms like me. :lol:

The length of the filter doesnt matter for the most part. As long as it threads on and fits properly. The shorter just wont hold as much oil and maybe get dirtier

idk but Im sure its fine. Fram are known to be "not that great" of a filter. Ive used OEM, Wix, K&N and Mobile One and never had problems...

Amen to that - I just took a look underneath this thing in preparation for an oil change and all I can say is: Holy. Crap.

They couldn't have found a spot where the filter isn't completely blocked by lines, brackets and other items? Not looking forward to dealing with that!

Anyone have tips or tricks to make it easier to get to the filter? I think it's too far down to do from the top, no? Perhaps an oil filter wrench will make it easier?

I use a K&N filter so I can use a one inch wrench to loosen it. But that still doesn't help some of you get it out....

You could try an oil filter relocation kit next time you do an oil change. There is a small discussion about one here somewhere but its to difficult to find from my phone.

Thanks Digger - I think that's probably the best option. I'm not too concerned with physically getting it out of the spot as much as getting it lose/tight.

I just finished changing the oil for the first time on my wife's 09 liberty we bought a couple months ago. After having to go back to town to get the correct filter (wally world listed the wrong one, or I just picked up the wrong one I dunno) and going to three auto parts stores to find one :evil:

, it was not that difficult of a job...its just frustrating. From the location of the filter to the location of the oil fill spout (need a tall funnel) to the ridiculously long dip stick the design is just silly. Makes me appreciate working on my land rover :ROTFL:

For the record I used the standard Fram filter (never had a problem with em) and it was the same size as the factory filter.

Just did the break-in oil change this afternoon (775 mi).

That filter is a pain! To be honest though, it wasn't as bad I thought it would be. It would have been damn-near impossible without a filter wrench (top style) as the a-hole who installed the factory filter torqued it to about 75ft. lbs.

I spent about 20 minutes trying to loosen it by hand before realizing it was a waste of time, running over to the local parts guy and getting a Fram filter wrench. When I got back it took me all of 5 minutes to get it off.

All-in-all not too bad a job. A lift kit would make it even easier....hmmm.....

a lift kit does help. i never jack my car up to do fluids now. :lol:

i even took off and reinstalled my tank skid, never again though

Pop the drive shaft next time you need to pound your skid :wink:

ya i was looking at that when i first started. just didnt have any wd-40 or whatever and didnt want to end up with a broken bolt or something cause they looked a little rough.

mobil1 oil and filter 5w 20
i found oil filter pliars sitting on some hoses the dealer must have left it there last oil change.. would have sucked if it got caught in my belts... :banghead:

im done with dealerships

The Fram filter most stores carry that fits the 2010 KK is a 10060. It is significantly shorter. If you go on their website, it shows the optimal filter is a 10590. It is the same size as the factory filter. The filter books in the stores say 10060. I suppose either will work but I would choose the larger one (If you can't find them in a store, look on ebay).

I have considered relocating the filter but have not found a good location for it. By the way I think the guy that puts filters on at the factory is named Godzilla. That thing is on way too tight. The second time I changed filters was much easier. I even managed to do it without removing the skids. Still, the person that picked the location for it must be a sick, twisted and deeply disturbed individual. It is a royal pain to deal with.
