have you checked the belt tensioner for it flopping around? remotely it sounds like that when they go bad

This is the only way I can think of to identify the sound short of forking over the $95 diagnostic fee the dealership wants or the $49 the local shop wants... The Jeep is a 2008 Liberty with 53,000 miles. The noise started at the tail end of a road trip a few weeks ago. It may be accompanied by a small coolant leak. You can disregard the video if you like and listen to the rattley groaning noise. yes the audio is a bit difficult but it gives the general idea of the noise I'm hearing I hope. I think we are on the same page though. I just double checked the tensioner and it has no wobble. BUT looking down on the belt the only pulley that seems to have any wobble/vibration is the waterpump pulley. It is slight, but it is there none the less. Is this normal? I was leaning towards waterpump due to the small coolant leak to begin with. |

is this "small coolant leak" look like it's coming from under/behind the water pump? like, stick your finger under it and feel around.. WITH THE ENGINE OFF.. see if ya end up with antifreeze on your finger there's a weep hole in the housing underneath, when the water pump starts trashing it'll start weeping antifreeze |

It hotter than hell under there still. BUT with minimal burning on my finger tips I could tell It is wet around the lower gasket. The stamped numbers on the bottom are visible moist. Under/inside the pulley is dry. 1 lower bolt head is wet. anything above the waterpump is dry. |

pop the belt off and rotate the pump by hand wiggle the pully back and forth and see if it wiggles the pump shaft i have suspicions that you found your noise |

Cudos to you jarhead! Pulled the belt, found a lot of slop in that pulley. I must say Jeep didn't do too bad of job designing this guy either it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected removing it. I simply drained all the coolant out of the petcock valve. Removed the battery, removed the horn. Removed the coolant/washer fluid reservoir. Removed the fan/fan shroud(nice this was one piece). And too my surprise I didn't have to turn the alternator or the AC compressor or the power steering pump. 8 bolts and it was out. Their was quite a bit of wobble in the shaft. I will purchase the new one tomorrow, and hopefully re-installation goes just as smooth. thanks again for the help Jeepinjarhead03 Jeremy |
