I'm looking to do my first in home oil change this weekend and would love some pointers :)

I've changed the oil on my motorcycle before so have a grasp of the process. But never a car..let alone the jeep.

I haven't read the service manual yet but did cruise the forums and read what I could..still have a couple questions though.

Where is the plug under the jeep?

How much should I expect? ( I have a 10l pan with 3-4 in it from motorcycle changes )

Would it be bad to go from conventional to blended oil at 40k miles?

How much should I buy for the refill/regular changes every 3k ( regardless of intel/opinion/material cost I always change after 2,500-3,000 miles )

IIRC the plug is on the passenger side. I would expect about 4.5 quarts or so. The oil filter is a little tough to get to. If you look there are some channels to route the oil. Line your pan up under those. I didn't see them the first time and got oil all over. You can run some flush through too when you switch from regular to blended or synthetic

Gotcha. I'll probably just stick to conventional until 60k.

What kind of filter would you suggest?

I would go with either OEM or WIX. You should be able to get the WIX filters at NAPA.

Pureolator pure one or nothing.
IMO its the best filter on the market.

There are plenty of good oil filters on the market. I would hardly say that the Pure One is the best. Mobil 1, K&N, WIX, Bosch Distance +, Pure One, Mopar, etc... are all good filters.

For the money, nothing beats a WIX, though.

Oil change done :) easy peasy!!
Took me about 20 minutes because I made sure the oil was warm, not hot. ( I learned that makes it faster with my bike >_> )

Filled the filter like you all suggested and even cleared the change oil indicator when I start it up.

A little tough? Please share any tips on making it JUST a little tough :furious:

The gaps to get your arms to the filter are so tight, I could only get one hand at a time up there. I don't see how removing the front skid plate would help, but removing the A/C probably would :?

It took me half an hour just to remove and replace the filter...and I splashed dirty oil on my neck and clean oil on my forehead :banghead:

Forgive my rant, but this is the worst filter location I have ever tried to get to.

My wife asked "will it be easier next time now that you've done it once?" I said yes, since Valvoline will do it next time!

Anybody have tips?

The local Goodyear shop changes my oil and rotates tires (bought tires from them) for $30. The only problem I've ever had with them... one time them left the skid plate loose. Had not clue as to what that rattle was until I crawled under the Liberty.
