While considering some options for moving the spare from under my KK, I was looking at the amount of room there is with it removed. Then I started thinking about mounting a second fuel tank, from a KJ. Have a selector switch like the Chevy pickup with two tanks. (the older ones, not sure how the newer ones are).
Has anyone else thought of this or tried it?
Not that I'm gonna run out and pick up a fuel tank but if it's possible, legal and not too expensive it might be worth looking into.

I'm sure it's feasible, but where would the spare go? On the roof rack? LOTS of mpg crushing drag and noise there.

If someone made a rear bumper with a spare tire mount, that would be best IMO.

Detours makes a Knucklebone to bring it up and I'm pretty sure there's going to be a bumper soon.

I would love to do this to my 2011 KK. I like driving. I currently have plans for a 3,200 mile road trip. Detroit to Duluth to Dallas then to Alligator, MS and finally back to Detroit. All this while towing a small trailer with my motorcycle.

I didn't even think about the use on the road, I was looking at the overland possibilities and not needing to carry all of those Jerry cans. Although, four more Jerry cans full of fuel would get you so much further. If done properly, there could be a way to dispense the gas into your bike also, hmmm....maybe Jerry cans are better for that.

This is a great idea. When I had my FJ a company actually made a kit available. It doubled our carrying capacity. The only issue I can see is that it might hang lower on th KK vs KJ but we wont know until some tries to mount one up. I will def be looking into this though as I probably would hve bought an extra tank for my FJ if I still had it. Simple math would say that an average KK could probably get atleast 700miles on a single/double fillup

Just read through that post and very promising information. Maybe if some had a KJ tank to test fit without the spare. I like how the secondary tank just pumps into the primary tank, less wiring and tubing needed

That would be easier probably than what I was thinking, less expensive too. I wonder why they didn't use a fuel tank for a grand Cherokee. From what I understand, the comander has the same chassis.
I spoke with the head mechanic at work today. He thinks that a dual tank set up like trucks have are about two grand to install with new parts. After the installation is done, then you'll have to program the computer for it. Looks like the gravity fill is a better way to go. I don't think we'd be able to get the computer programmed for it.

Not sure what the cost would be. I contacted the guy that made the kit about the possibility of one for the liberty. He said something about not offering anything because of smog or something.

Yea there is some type of restriction for gas vehicles and multiple tanks, but the same restriction doesn't apply to diesel vehicles. I gotta do more research on that.

So Ive been reading a little on the restrictions of adding or having aux fuel tanks for a gas vehicles. The biggest problem comes with the integrity of the tank because gas is more explosive than diesel therefore the rules are less stringent. If we can find a way to make the KJ tank fit with no leaking issues then we should have no issues trying to pass any SMOG or visual tests. The leaking issues deal with the danger aspect of gasoline and how important it is that it doesnt happen.

Will adding a second tank cause a mil light? I mean cause the engine fault light to come on for the fuel system pressure test?


Edit: While driving from Detroit to Duluth I would get 400 miles to a tank. That would leave me with over 1/8 of a tank. My speeds ranged from 65 to 25 through the small towns in the UP. So another 20 gal tank would let me drive 800 miles before I would need to stop. Ok, that's nuts.

I was just going over this thread and noticed that you're getting 400 miles to a tank. I don't come close to that. How are you getting 22 mpg? 2wd?
I still haven't done anything more to look into this but while I was at summit racing yesterday I grabbed a flier for a company that makes high capacity fuel tanks for trucks. They may have some useful information.

I'll be contacting them but it looks like diesel is the key to being able to do this. I'm not sure at this point if we'd pass a vehicle safety inspection with two gas tanks.
