Greetings all - After lurking here for a while, I reckon it's time to contribute with some pictures & questions. Background: My Jeep is a 2008 Liberty Sport, 6 Speed, 4x4. Bought it used in 2010 with 28k miles, and it's at about 65k now. It has spent its entire existence in Western PA. I was informed at the last inspection that it needed front brakes, and instead of paying the $450 that the local dealer wanted, decided to tackle it myself. After getting the front end lifted up & the wheels off, this is the carnage that I was greeted with: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Needless to say, it definitely stops much better now that the new brakes are on. However, the amount of rust on the hubs & suspension bits are cause for concern. The main questions I have are: 1) Is it safe to drive in this condition? 2) Does anybody else's look this bad? 3) Will Chrysler do anything about it? |

Unless there is rust through somewhere that it is not shown should be OK Have seen others that were not taken care of look almost as bad Highly doubt that Chrysler would do anything about it since they can not control how a vehicle is taken care of and what kind of roads it is operated on |

Out of curiosity, what could be done to prevent this from happening? It gets washed regularly & sprayed underneath to remove salt in the winter. Is there any action I can take now to make sure it doesn't get worse? (Outside of getting a new one or replacing everything). |

Im in the midwest and rust is around here. Mine was not that bad back at 60k when i did all the service on it, but still had rust. Easiest and probably cheapest thing to do is to get a wire brush to clean all that off, clean it off as need be with degreaser/water/whatever you want. At this time lightly sand and clean any other parts you want to as well while your under there. Make sure it is dry and clean from dirt and debris, then spray it with some rustoleum rust-converter (2-3 good coats). This will clean off your rust, help to keep it from rusting as quit again, and makes your underside look tons better

If they are solid, you are good. if you want to be sure, just take a wire brush to the parts and clean em and then throw some high temp paint on em. It will keep them from rusting and make it look purty under there. Remember to stay out of anything that moves and away from rubber. |
