Post subject:  225/75-16 duratecs?
Anyone else think this may be a good idea? There is good prices on tire crawler. I was looking at 235/7016 or 245/70-16. My kk is stock at the moment. Within the year ill be doing the econo lift or the jba 2.5. I am on the road 80% of the time and have some property i goto and go camping. The other tires i was looking at are the hankook atm's

Duratracs are a really good tire. I would say it seems to be the tire of choice on the forum these days.

The 225/75/R16 size will fit fine on your stock KK. I'm currently running a set of Cooper Discoverer A/T3's in that size, that I got about a year and a half before lifting. They are aggressive enough looking that they don't look too bad under the 4 inch lift. Keeping the stock tire size, I am still getting close to stock gas mileage too.

My next set of tires will be Duratracs, but now that I'm lifted I'm going to be looking at the 245/75/R16 size. This size is too big to fit under the stock suspension and still have any room for articulation, but with a lift it will be good. Many lifted LOST members run this size.

If you are not planning to lift for a while, I would say go with the 225's now. But if you think you'll have a lift within a year or so, and your current tires are not dangerously bald, I would say to hold off and buy the 245's after lifting. Let's see what other people say too, but that is my :2cents:.

Those are a great set of tires according to a bunch of LOST members. I don't have them but they'll be my next tire.

I'm stock suspension and all that and I run 245/70/16 tires. They fit with minimal rubbing but articulation isn't the best since they will rub. If I could do it again, with stock suspension in mind, I would go 235's instead. They'll fit a little better and may help with gas milage compared to 245's.

Also keep in mind the rim choices as well. If you're keeping stock rims, nothing to consider. If you're going aftermarket, you should go no wider than 7" rims (according to members on here).

you can use an 8" rim but pay attention to the backspace. If you go wider, don't stack all of it on the inside.

When I was shopping/ordering tommudd brought up the point of how wide of a rim a 245/70/16 could fit and a consensus was that 7" was the primo width, although I guess you could try to stretch the tire an extra inch and get an 8" rim :?:

You could "stretch" one that far but not a good idea :wink:

You could "stretch" one that far but not a good idea :wink:


Probably not enough sidewall for it to look right. My 245/75-16's looked about the same, a wider rim won't make the tire any wider at the tread. Check with the tire manufacturer, I recently found that some call for a specific width rim and some give a range ie. 6"-8"

I'd stick with the 225s with the stock suspension. But duratracs all the way. Best tire I've ever owned. Don't forget if you go with the 245s your going to have some articulation issues and it may be a good idea to regear your diffs.

Thanks for all the fast replies. I have decided to wait until i do the lift. Esp since some idiot at discount tire decided to buy me 4 new tires and tps' because he didnt put it in gear just used the e brake and let it roll out of the parking lot and busted 2 tires and 1 rim.

Make sure your other rim isn't bent. I bought a couple rims and the one that looked the best got my spare. As it turned out, it ended up being bent. It was discovered during a load test balance with a dial indicator. The guy was able to balance it but told me that it will probably cause some vibration so it sits under the Jeep. :2cents:
