Hi Y'all I have a 2010 3.7 limited and read cover to cover anything and every thing I could find before fiddling. This whole induction debate got me poring ofer the engine bay wanting to see how the stock air box was fed. There is this flex pipe attached to a plenum that sits next to the headlamp but is blocked by a moulded grille element. Of corse this is mirrored on both sides for visual uniformity. So at first I attacked that with a deemed and made what is best described as a rough hole. I then pondered more and decided to remove the entire black vertical bar section of the grill. When I took the grill off I noticed it was structural so had to cut discriminately and carefully so as not to destroy it. I planned to fit a plastic honeycomb mesh in its place. So with my trusty leatherman wave I made the 2 parts ready by trimming. I then drilled some holes to accept dowel rods in the large black bars to use as supports for cable ties. Now it's all done and schmick, locks boss and factory but the best part is that the stock air box remains 100% but it flows completely unmodified. The engine response is dramatically improved and my highway consumption at 60mph dropped below 10l . Don't waste money on anything but a new filter and the mesh some cable ties and 1x 8mm dowel rod. Bloody ipad won't let me attach a pic so it will have to wait. Also don't bother with exhausts, just eliminate the last muffler and have a straight pipe welded in place. I added a dual ss outlet and the job is done. :pepper:

I'll look forward to seeing the pics. I did something like that once, but have it duct taped closed currently. I was seeing a lot of water come thru that hole during rainstorms, although thankfully none ever reached the air box. Keep us up to date with the performance improvements. What was your l/100km or mpg before the mod?

Here is the intake behind the headlight:

Here is what I trimmed out of the plastic grille:

Before on the highway I couldn't get better than 12.5 I don't think it will make much diff around town as there is not enough wind velocity. And the extra responsiveness is still too much fun

I think if you use an oiled KN replacement the water ingress from rain wont matter unless its a deluge after all F1 cars have open ducts and run in the rain.

Running a K&N would be the worst mod

I did a 3 inch tube from the airbox straight out to the grill on mine back in 2006, been running it that way ever since with no water coming in, no mesh over the pipe or anything. More than 140,000 miles running it with a paper filter , no water/ no problems . Grills were more open on the KJs . Highway mileage 21-22 all the time
I thought it was funny as heck when the KKs came out and they had that tube, what copy-cats !

Yeah I did the grille because just having the hole there looks ornery. Will post the exhaust pics later

Has anyone done a tranny swap? This box is absolute crap! Also the ecu program holds the revs far too long if you blip the throttle if it had a 5 or 6 speed box the fuel consumption would drop dramatically and the performance would improve too. From what I have read the flywheel is the issue? Surely with an adaptor plate something is possible?

Not much difference in gas mileage between manuals and autos
at least not in the KJs from the guys who had them

I would put money on it I would improve 1-2 mpg with a manual.
A true hypermiler knows how to improve gas mileage with a manual.
It's pretty hard to improve mileage with a dumb 4 speed no matter what you do.

I did the conversion: 9.2 L / 100km = 25.566793 mpg!

That is a great mod if it increased the mpg. Never knew the grille would be that restricting, but if you have seen results, it may be true.

I put the pic there or no one would believe me. I think more air leans the mix somewhat and results in a better burn hence the improved mpg. The reason I posted it is that it was way cheaper than a pod or any other system which would work on a traditional vehicle. And the cost. All up $55.0 for the mesh. $1.97 for the dowels and 4.59 for cable ties.
Still wish I could change the box. And would love the 7 speed Mercedes box hmmm I need an engineer to help me. if its built by a man it can be fixed by another man

Gageraid, this grille mod is right up your alley! :jester: I'm not ready to try it yet but if we have a few people reporting good results I might look into it.

I need more pictures showing how he did it. A few months ago I was able to sperate the grille from the vertical plastic pieces, but put it back on.
I don't wanna hack anything yet on the KK.
You know I'm always trying to do a mod concerning mpgs.

Tomorrow since I have off from school and work I'm going to take the grille off and look at my options.
I don't want to remove all the vertical plastic pieces in the grille, just the solid ones, especially the one blocking the intake by the headlight.
Any suggestions what to use to cut this piece off? I don't really have many tools...

Have you driven it around yet? Any additional pics would be awesome.

Lowridah and Gageraid: I'm waiting to hear how much of a difference the intake mod makes for you! You two along with Paulishus make it a sample size of 3. As a scientist I want to see some DATA!
