Post subject:  Clunking shocks after 3.5 inch lift

I have been looking on the forum for awhile just not posting but now I need some input. I did allot of research on the lift wanted and just before winter I went with the tommud 3.5 inch lift and aside from some clunking in the rear it has been great. The clunking wasnt severe but it has been an annoyance, so I waited until after winter to start wrenching on it to figure out the cause. I installed the lift myself and I tightened everything while it was on the ground. I checked everything I could think of with no luck until today. I removed the rear shocks and took it for a test and the clunk is gone. At least ive narrowed down the problem. I tried shimming the top and bottom mounts with washers but that didnt work. Is there anything obvious that I'm not thinking of other than bad shocks straight from ironman?

Is there a gap between the shock bushing and the bolt? I could be completely off but other than that I have no idea.

You mean like an undersized bolt? I thought that at first because the upper shock bolt necks down slightly, I tried a bolt that fits the bushing completely but the noise continued

Yea thats what I meant. Can you replicate the noise by hand if either the top or bottom mounts are disconnected? Like leave the top connected and compress and decompress the shock and see if theres any movement in either mount?

Haven't done that yet I'll give that a quick try

at least you didn't go off road with out those shocks! I wouldn't want to drive in a vehicle that doesn't have any spring retainers! :2cents:

Just tried it and I couldn't replicate the noise by hand and I didn't notice any movement in either mount, not sure what to try next, does anyone know what the torque spec is on the shock bolts? I've been making them as tight as i can by hand I wouldn't think that's the issue

I make them as tight as my air tools can at 100 psi. they wouldn't be more then 30ft. lb. though. possibly 25ft. lb.

I have a torque wrench, but have rarely used it. lock tite ensures the bolts don't wiggle them selves loose.

i just used the air impact to get then as tight as I could and it's still making noise, I didn't really expect that to work but I'll try anything at this point, I'm completely out of ideas at this point

Check the trac bar yet?

Yeah I've checked the track bar, sway bar, sway bar links, upper and lower control arms, but since the nose went away when i removed the shocks I'd guess it has to be that. I can't think of anything to try with the shocks that i haven't already done though, could this be defective shocks?

are you checking with the rear lifted off the ground?

how long have you had the kit? used or new?

put one shock on at a time. drive slowly (like real slow!) and hit a bump. do that with both shocks. I doubt its the shocks.

I was checking with the rear lifted but with Jack stands under the axle so the suspension was compressed, i bought the lift new, installed it 5 months ago and it has made the noise since the install, i removed the shocks and the noise is gone after that i tried installing just the diver's side shock with washers shimming the top and bottom mount and then maxing out my impact to tighten them then drove slowly a lap around my neighborhood (bumpy PA tar and chipped road) the noise is still there, haven't tried just the passenger shock yet

Which rear shocks did you get?

Can you rule out interior noise?
Our rear storage plastic thingy is noisy if those plastic hoop pieces are broken.

Post subject:  Re: Clunking shocks after 3.5 inch lift

Yeah its not interior noise it has to be something related to the shocks because if I remove the shocks completely there's absolutely no clunking noises, Ironman shocks have that plastic sleeve instead of a rubber boot so maybe that's it but I don't no how to be sure, but I wouldn't think that would rattle enough to be noticeable otherwise everyone with Ironman shocks would have this problem
