Not specifically jeep question.

Do the gears in the front diff still move even when 4WD is not engaged? Does putting it in 4WD engage the front shaft, or does it direct power to it? My guess is that they move with the wheels even if 4WD is not engaged.

Yes, the gears do move. But there is no load because they're basically just free spinning. No load or torque is applied unless put into 4WD. If you happen to blow up your front diff innards you can always pull the axle shafts and leave it out of 4WD to prevent the gears from moving at all. I know this from experience...
