Just wanted to check and see who's staying Sunday.

I plan to stay at the campground Sunday night, and mabe roam through the Smokies on Mon and go creek/river hunting and camp wherever I end up mon evening.

Would be nice to have company on Sunday night, and anyone invited to join in the creek hunt.

I'll be staying Sunday night as well and taking my time coming back through the Smokies and Nantahala NFs on Monday heading back to Athens (and actually take more time but cut 45 miles off the actual distance) by taking US-441.

Colin,
Check out Hwy. 129 coming back. It goes through some killer scenery and becomes the "tail of the dragon", world famous with bikers and sports car enthusiasts for it's switchbacks. Google it and check it out. My son, Scott, and I will be at the motel Thursday eve. and leaving Monday, also, and plan on going back that way. Maybe we could caravan and 'do the tail'. It ought to be a blast. :D

I'm up for it! Does it have any steep grades?

Terry
you can do it with the trailer and KJ , just take it slow ( you will want to and have to anyways)
When you all go over it remember me,
over the years I have taken a 1000 Kawasaki, 4 Harleys, the KJ, Cherokee and a Long Nose 379 Peterbilt with a 45 foot flat bed across it! Helped to have a Highway Patrol Escort!
The 1000 Kaw with a big bore kit in it was the most fun! Thats back when you could still run it wide open!
beautiful Drive, don't miss the overlook to the lake

Terry going from north to south you have a hill going up and then lots of turns and switch backs once on top, ( for the next 11 miles) right after you come into North Carolina it starts to go down a pretty good hill at the bottom is a tourist trap always lots of people coming and going.

Also they are having a Save the Dragon Motorcycle Rally on the 10th and 11th so maybe some left over riders when you cross

GOOD GRIEF!! I did not know about this! I need to crawl out from under my rock. If anything needs saving it's definitely this section of road. The link to the "Save the Dragon" site is attached. Please consider at least going there and checking it out.

I've been communicating w/ the local Harley dealer and he has some insight concerning the "Stop I-3" crowd.

John, this is the not first time I have heard of this. This has been a proposal since 2004... but has never received approval or funding; check out this web site to see the current status on the project (http://www.interstate-guide.com/i-003.html). I’m not trying to be negative but what exactly does this organization plan to do? Some sort of legal battle (very expensive) or a show of power in numbers. This is interesting though, I wonder how these folks at WaysSouth earn a living... and have they had success keeping road construction projects cancelled in the past. I tried to research it but couldn’t find anything. If you know details I would be interested in knowing. I know this is an excellent “CAUSE” if in fact the project is moving forward, but there is something about the WaysSouth organization that I’m not sure about! Mike

Hey John... Here's an interesting perspective from Scott at US Rider News (see email below) to the I-3 project. I personally believe that this WaysSouth group may be raising money for themselves by creating panic for a project that hasn't been approved or funded. Mike

(from Scott):
Subject: RE: Interstate 3 project.

This has been going on for a couple of years. Started in 2003.it's not
official.but it keeps coming back up in Congress every so often.. Since the
actual route hasn't been surveyed and determined exactly, there are some who
believe that if an interstate were built, it might actually help the Dragon
because it would take away that commercial traffic that clogs it up now.log
trucks and such.

This group is really more about stopping any interstate through this
area.and while I can understand their reasons, I would support anything that
took traffic off the rural roads in that area, leaving the area for
motorcyclists to enjoy.

I know this site is not supposed to be political...and this isn't, necessarily, but before anyone gives money to any "fund" we should know if it's legitimate. Forgive me if I've mislead anyone or taken up too much time or space.
Peace
John
