Thanks so much for your response, Bob. I went on Youtube and listened to the difference between rod knock and a thrown rocker arm, and from what I can tell I have had rod knock to some degree for quite a while. My mechanic diagnosed the noise to be coming from the lower end, not the valve train, so he thinks a rod bearing went kaput. The clattering seems more random, not regular, so it might have fallen apart, but no rod was ejected through the block or oil pan like some of the dramatic photos I've found. This would also explain why it still turns over and runs, albeit noisily. Of course this was a quick diagnosis and they should know more on Monday when they do a little more detective work. I will ask him about rocker arms just to be sure.

After weighing my options I've decided to go with a remanufactured Jasper 3.7L V6 engine. http://www.jasperengines.com/index.php
The Jasper company ships the engine with all new pistons, rods, crankshaft, lifters and valves, water pump, oil pump, oil pan, etc. so the only thing original is the block, which they clean up real good and make sure everything is in spec. It is run-tested at the factory and comes with 0 miles and a 3 year, 100,000 mile warranty that covers not only parts but labor too should anything go wrong. I hope to have the KK for a long time, so I thought I'd go this route rather than gambling on a junkyard motor that has an unknown history and has been sitting around for 5 years after it was in an accident. The difference is about $2000, but to me it's worth it. Hopefully I'll get another 200K+ miles from this thing.

The problem is city folk don't know how to build garages! They build them to keep two 1969 VW Bugs in there and nothing else . :banghead:

There's a couple of places up the street from me for rent that has some large 2 car garages. I'm seriously thinking of moving.

My house here is nothing fancy or even that big, but man if it was in the Columbus area it would be worth at least 2000-2300 a month in rent. Amazing what people are trying to rent for 1500-1750, the areas maybe the place to live, but kitchen counters with large cigarette burns on them, cup board doors loose and falling off, faucets dripping, apartment size fridge...and the guy is a Realtor. :shock:

Oh well so much for the Dublin area :banghead:

Hey Tom, check on Craigslist there are a lot of nicer homes for rent in the burbs for 1/2 what the RE agent is showing you. Found a nice one in Hilliard 3b/2bath 2.5 garage for $725.
