| Post subject: | Towstraps "TICK" !! |
I, want to let you all know that Towstraps jeep has been torndown in my garage since Sun !! We decided to install a tranny cooler Sat. afternoon after installing the cooler, Jim started the jeep up while I was ready to add some tranny fluid when I hear this loud "TICK" "TICK" "TICK" "TICK" "TICK" I did some researh online and found some KJ owners that have had some oil sludge problem's or the oil breaking down due to heat, most KJ owner's stated that they had changed oil every 3k or three months, and still had oil sludge and burnt oil plugging up oil passages and burng up engines !! So with that info in my head I call Jim the Sun. morining and had it apart that afternoon ! No sludge or burnt oil !! Thank the jeep gods for that !! I did find the pass. timing chain tentioner frozen!!! Yea ! The drivers timing chain was tight and the tentioner would compress when you pushed on it, the pass. side chain was loose with a half inch play and the tentioner was not moving at all !! I orderd new tentioner's and a bunch of other parts and sould be reassembling Wed. evening I'll let you all know how It turns out !! |

I bought 3 tentioners for all three chains, I think the two cam tentioners were around $45.00 a piece and the crank tentioner was $30.00 . Im going to replace the waterpump, thermostat and housing, crank seal and gasket's while Im in there. The chain and guides look good from what I can see, If I see any sign of serious wear or streatch we will have to repalce them as well, I think with only 80k he should be fine with the old guildes and chains !! Well, now that I have a Job I got to get some sleep I'll talk at you all Later !!!!!! |

I had this tick a while back. My tensioner froze up too and it was the chain "ticking" that created the noise. I have around 107K on my jeep ...must be a kj thing. Oil gets changed every 3K too and a majority of my commutes (per day) range in the 50 mile mark. |

Well, Scott 1996xj, finished my Liberty up Thursday night, and it sure runs quiet and smooth now. I can't believe that he was able to do all that he did in two evenings. I can't imagine what the Jeep dealership would have charged, either. I owe Scott big time! My timing was poor on this. He had just started a new job on Monday and had hauled all his tools there. He was able to get by (barely) with the stuff I normally have in my Liberty. I can't thank him enough! Towstrap |
