I am going down to Livingston to scout some trails for a future LOST Ohio run. I'll most likely try to do our standard route on Saturday morning and check out the DBNF access roads in the afternoon. Sunday would be used as a day to check out the Natural Bridge area of Kentucky, as I've heard that there were some good spots to wheel around there.

Anyone interested?

ThunderbirdJunkie is most likely not going to be there unless he's riding shotgun.

But he'll go ahead and put in for that weekend off now

Hey guys, I’m glad there’s some interest. I need to clarify a few things.
1. This is going to be a recon run since many of us have been hearing about trails closing, being graded and put under gravel, etc. Simply put I don’t what to expect when we get there, so there will be a lot of “playing by ear.”
2. I will be going down with some of my friends Friday afternoon and staying until Sunday morning at the Lake Linville Campground (where we were in October a year and a half ago). Will any of you be willing to give up a seat for those who are tagging along for the weekend?
3. Proposed schedule:
a. Friday afternoon (anytime after 5pm) arrive at Lake Linville Campground
b. Saturday morning 9am meet at the gas station off I-75 exit 49 (Livingston exit), then head up Falls City Rd at 9:30
c. Lunch and plan for the afternoon run outside of town
d. Saturday afternoon (around 3 ish) – other National Forest access roads
e. Dinner and plan for Sunday morning
f. Sunday morning run somewhere
g. Home

Thoughts?

This is the best info I can find. Tried a Google search for Lake Linville Campground:

Quote:
Lake Linville Marina and Campgrounds
Daniel Boone Country - ROCKCASTLE
Lake Linville Rd
RENFRO VALLEY, 40473

Information
Full-service bait shop, food, skiing, boating, fishing, rental pontoons, johnboat rentals, paddle boats. Lakeview.

Contact Information
(606) 256-9696

Features
Electric, Water , Central Water, Store, Boat Launch, Licenses Available, Dump Station, Primitive Camping

If I remember correctly, we took I 75 to exit 59 (or maybe it was 62) and turned left off the highway. We passed a couple RV parks on the right, and then saw Lake Linville Rd on the left. It meandered along the lake for a mile or so and it dumped you right next to the bait shop/boat dock/camp office.

I started looking at the Forestry Service website for info on the area we'll be wheeling. I found some interesting pages that each of us should be familiar with.

http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/recreation/cromer.shtml - I am not 100% sure, but I believe Cromer's Ridge is accessed by the trail we take behind the 49er. This page illustrates why there is so much confusion about legal wheeling in Livingston. Since it is "closed to off highway vehicles" and under restoration, many believe that it is closed to ALL motor vehicles.

However, this page ( http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/recreation/ohv_main.shtml ) clearly states that licensed and tagged vehicles ARE PERMITTED on ALL FORESTRY ACCESS ROADS. It just so happens that many of those roads can contains some enjoyable obstacles for us. Also, this page indicates some legal trails open to ATVs. So we could check them out too if there is some interest, though I don't have a clue what to expect with them.

Finally, the Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) are available online here ( http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/maps/mvum.shtml ). If we print them out (44-page pdf) I'm afraid we'll lose clarity. I suggest we visit a Forestry Service Office to pick up a few of these maps for free. We can benefit by talking to the rangers about what's open, what to expect, what's been graded, where some of the cool spots are.

I think going and talking to the Rangers is a great idea, showing we want to do things right and willing to do whatever that takes, explain our group, what we do and also may mention we would be open for a trail cleanup or adopt a trail sort of thing. We may get some better response from them, than most which I am sure just show up and run the trails without ever talking to anyone.

You may also mention the Ohio President and Vice President are both great guys!!!

I spoke to the London Ranger station yesterday and was told that they close at 4:30 on Friday and won't be open on the weekend. This station is off I75 at exit 38 (about 25-30 min past our campsite exit).

Does anyone plan on getting to camp earlier than 4 or 5 like we discussed?

I will try to stop by the Stearns Ranger station in Lexington on the way down. I will probably be passing through there right around 4pm.

Doesnt look like you will be going to the Stanton station but if you ever do dont expect to get much information. Im not sure if I looked like a young boy wanting to get in trouble or what but I went in there once checking on some trails and I had a hard time getting them to even talk to me.

Hope you all have a good time! :)
