TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - The Toledo Zoo says one of the oldest female chimpanzees in the North American zoo population has died.

Fifi, a 49-year-old chimp, died Friday. Fifi came to the Toledo Zoo in 1963 at the age of three and was easily identified by a small white toy alligator she carried for nine years.

The zoo said Sunday that Fifi's keepers noticed Thursday morning that she seemed stiff and tired. After improving early Friday, she then appeared disoriented in the afternoon and then deteriorated rapidly until she died.

A necropsy revealed possible blood vessel abnormalities in her brain. Further tests will be done.

49......isn't that old for a chimp??? What is their normal average lifespan anyway??

Poor monkey.

Yes sad day for Toledo! :cry:

I knew she had been around forever from what people said but thats a long time. She was almost as old as me! :shock:

I live 10 minutes from the zoo but have been there once in the 5 years I have lived here!
Did see her though when I was there, now wonder what they do with her, bury her, never thought about it.

Toledo goes from being on National TV for a bar shoot out to now having one of the oldest chimps dieing.

Never a dull moment

And yes Albert, Ohio is short one monkey now...plus Chris is out of state as well!
