I used to get competitor samples ( ink and pigments) for our sales force, then compare/color match them to our products for counter offers. After they laid off 38 people and the whole QC dept last summer, now I spend majority of my day packing out and shipping samples to customers.... boy, that 4 year and 1000's of $$$ for college really is paying off...... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Oh yeah, I am one of those guys with a degree too. Still paying for it in more ways than one. Lets just say a degree in Comm. theory is a high priced way to have an interesting conversion with someone. :banghead:

It's funny that its hard to get a job anymore with out a degree , but how many actually work in a position that their degree was?
I went to Kent State back in the days of being afraid of being shot at, :grim: :dead:

I have a degree in computers, but haven't had a chance to use it. By now it's out dated!

I use my education, I'm the engineer for a scissor lift / whatevery you'll pay us to build manufacturer. I basically get concepts from sales and turn them into reality. I do the modeling, hydraulics & electrical design, stress calcs, sourcing vendors, etc etc. Basically there is me and one other guy the do all of the engineering & CAD right now since we keep trimming personnel. He does all the "variations of standards" special units, and I do all the new projects.

I think I got some insight on people's issues with engineers in this thread. So many people learn stuff in school that they can't apply to the real worth, that they figure we're the same way. Now I have no doubt that many engineers don't use what they learned on a daily basis, I know many who don't. But also, a lot of us do.

I'm an industrial electrician (my actual trade)/maintenance mechanic/welder/machinist/machine repair/PLC Programmer/Robot Technician in a plant that builds OEM replacement parts for GM (among other customers). We also have a 2nd plant about 10 miles away that does Electrocoating and Powdercoating. For the past 15years I've been working with stuff like this:
Hem Press: folds the edge of doors over
Image
and this
Robotic MIG welder
Image
and this
500watt YAG robotic laser cutter
Image
making stuff like this (400 of these per shift!)
Image

Helps with all my recent fab work!! 8)
