Finally got the cylinder head off. Not pretty. Valve seat was sitting on top of the piston, broken into several pieces. Head is damaged, not sure if it's repairable. Piston is scored and has a piece of valve seat stuck to it. Only positive I see is the that the cylinder appears undamaged.
A couple new heads (don't trust the other head now) and a piston assembly and I'm sure I can get it going again, but what's next? I guess the oil pump should be replaced too, cause that has killed other engines.
Need to do more research.
Really wishing I had a big garage right now.
From someone who's been there before.......
Since you've got it apart anyway, take the time to do a complete inventory, and consider
doing a complete rebuild.
As you said yourself, don't trust the other head... pull it and have both done.
In my case, it was only $200 additional to completely do BOTH heads (valves, seats, 3 angle, even cc'd)
than to do just the damaged one.
If you do one piston, may as well do all six. Otherwise you're just asking for one of the others to go.
New pistons, and rings all around. May as well consider the rods too.
When I burnt an exhaust valve on my 6 cylinder, the cost of the head work for just that
valve was $600 parts and labor. (Pull the head, replace damaged parts, install the head)
I ended up pulling the motor myself, and getting the heads completely done (3 angle, port & polish, valves, lifters, seats, & cc'd),
the block was decked 0.012, new pistons & rings, rods were balanced and shot peened, oil journals were camfered,
crankshaft was balanced, new oil pump, new aluminum intake, and new carb. All this still cost me under $1000.
All I had to do was re-install the "brand new" motor. I went a little overboard with add ons, and bought a couple of
things that were "nice to have" not need to have, but hey, that's me.
Yeah, I know..... it's only money. But think about it.
Spending a couple hundred now for a complete rebuild can end up saving allot later on down the road.
Especially if you can do most of the work yourself.
