Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July. One mile per hour over the speed limit and the machine will get you a nice $375.00 ticket in the mail. Beginning July 1st, the State of Illinois will begin using the speed cameras in areas designated as "Work Zones" on major freeways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00 ticket for the FIRST offense. The SECOND offense will cost $1000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension. Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license, which allow insurance companies to raise Insurance rates.

This is the harshest penalty structure ever set for a governmental unit involving PHOTO speed enforcement. The State already has two camera vans on line issuing tickets 24/7 in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH. Photos of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken.

Another step closer towards an Orwellian society.

Nothing to do with safety, everything to do with revenue. Just watch and see what suddenly, spontaneously becomes a "work zone".

I have to disagree on this one guys. It is a matter safety. BUT, states are looking for ways to raise money in these money strapped days. Here in Saint Augustine they are going to start reinforcing noise laws on exhaust systems and stereos. The number of speeding fines has also increased.

This is old news, this started in 2004 according to the original release so my question is why do they have to release a statment again, shouldn't this already be happening?

It's a matter of safety when it's a real construction zone. People working. There have been instances where states start using wider and wider criterion to call it a 'work' zone. I have no problem for expensive tickets. Road crews have people killed every year because some yahoo drives through at 80 mph. I'm totally with that. But one mph over the speed limit nets that big a ticket? That's no longer about safety, that's pure revenue.

I don't know about IL, but in WI it is only a work zone if there are people there working
