Post subject:  LOST in Manistee ***UPDATED 02.20.12***

OK, guys & gals, IL-LOST has set tentative plans for some late winter/early spring wheeling:

Dates: March 16-18 (alternate dates March 23-25)
Where: Manistee National Forest in Michigan

Since this trip is in March, there is a chance for a late season snow storm, hence the alternate dates. As the dates get closer, we'll keep watch on the weather and decide about a week ahead which dates we'll go.

It will be cold either way, so camping is completely up to those hearty enough to attempt it. I'll post up more details in the next couple of weeks regarding available accomodations, etc.

***UPDATE***
We'll be running the trails in the Baldwin-Whitecloud District of Manistee N.F. The closest accommodations to the trailheads are in Big Rapids, MI. I've done a quick scan of the area's chain hotels and the two least expensive for that weekend are the Quality Inn & Suites @ $59/night and the Super 8 @ $61/night. We've stayed at the Quality Inn before and the rooms were fairly comfortable. (I can't vouch for the Super 8 ). I'm not sure that any of the area campgrounds will be open this early in the season.

Here are the addresses for both hotels:

Quality Inn
1705 S. State Street, Big Rapids, MI, US, 49307
Phone: (231) 592-5150
Fax: (231) 592-5157

Super 8
845 Water Tower Road, US Highway 131 at Exit 139, Big Rapids, MI 49307 US
Phone:1-231-796-1588
Fax:1-231-796-1588

Do you need off road decals or any of that to run these trails? ( like you do Silver Lake etc)
If so where do you get them from, order on line or somewhere up there?

Would love to go but I've already asked for to much time off in march because of must do things. After doing the trails in the Huron national forest I'm sure this area would be a great place to play. Hopefully I can hook up on the next run.

No stickers needed for the areas we will be traveling in since they are part of the National Forest. Michigan DNR only requires ORV stickers for state parks and state owned ORV/ATV/motorcycle trails.
Here's an excerpt from the Michigan "Handbook of Off-Road Vehicle Laws": "Vehicles that are licensed under the Motor Vehicle Code as "street vehicles" require an ORV license only when they are being used as an ORV. A street-licensed ORV does not need an ORV license to use forest roads, but it will need an ORV license if it is used on designated trails or in areas designated for cross-country use."

If you ever need to purchase a sticker for the state parks, the M-DNR has a great website that allows you to purchase online: http://www.michigan.gov/estore. ORV stickers (motorcycle, ATV) can be purchased here: http://www.mdnr-elicense.com/

There will definitely be at least one (maybe two) more runs to Manistee this year that we'll be doing. We've done some of the trails in Huron also - I'd like to go back and explore those a bit more too someday.

Looks like I'm gonna have to miss this one.

We're on overtime at work (including 1/2 day Saturday) "indefinitely".

The boss stopped short of making it mandatory, but was quick to add if everyone wasn't
showing up, it would become mandatory.

Keeping my fingers crossed for next time.

There are (unfortunately) those who choose to not obey trail markings and do stupid stuff. I haven't heard of any issues personally and Jan & I have never had any problems with the rangers we've crossed paths with. I do know that the Great Lakes 4WD Association (of which we are members) has been working with the Michigan DNR and other State and Federal agencies to try to better define the existing maps, keep current trails open and open new ones. We have the most current maps that are available online (March 2011). As long as we keep to marked trails and pay attention to any areas that may have been closed off since the maps were published, I think we should be fine.

I'm officially IN for the 17-18! (Assuming my full of crap employer doesn't try to force that Saturday on us.... the union is worthless these days!!!)

I can't do the Friday. However, um...

Do I need a Michigan ORV sticker?

Yeah yeah, shut up, I live in Michigan and don't already have a Michigan ORV sticker.

I think above posts say No to needing a sticker. I checked into getting one, they are only good until end of March. So if you bought one now it would cost 16.00 dollars for one month. Wait until April 1 and get the whole year. DNR web site DNR offices and local retailers sell them. My local hardware sells hunting fishing licenses and off road stickers.

Guess I'm out for this one! :furious: Thought I would make it but my wife is going to need a refill on one of her most expensive prescriptions around the 12th. With no insurance yet it'll run around $700!!!! :banghead: That kinda blows anything I might have been able to spend for the trip!

Everybody have fun and be safe !!!!

I so wish it were this week! Oh well, 10 more days! It will be interesting to see how much snow is still on the ground when we get there. It seems that area got hit with quite a bit this past weekend.

I'm north of Reed City we had snow on the ground before the storm that brought 12 inches. South of RC had no snow on the ground and didn't get as much snow.
50''s yesterday and 40's last night. Forecasting 60 today and rain. The 7 day forcast is all above freezing.
I'd bring the boat, kayak or canoe:)
