Rock slide has shut down I-70 and it could be awhile before the highway re-opens. If you are going to Moab from the East, you may want to use I-80 and come down or some other route. The detour is 200 additional miles. This happened Thanksgiving weekend 2004 and it was around 3 months before I-70 reopened.

 Oh, snap. I guess it is a good thing I already planned to take a Southern route from Kansas City so I could stop in Colorado Springs and visit some friends.

If anyone is contemplating taking the southern route through Denver/285/160/Durango/Monticello/Moab: Keep an eye on the weather and make sure Wolf Creek Pass is open!

I saw this today and started thinking about other ways to get there.

What do you CO/UT peeps think about taking 285 to 50 to 70 going thru Salida, Gunnison and Montrose? What passes to I have to contend with on that route?

Another option I saw was detouring thru Aspen - opinions?

I saw some crazy talk on CO4x4 about using Cottonwood Pass, which sounds like a nice mini offroad venture to break up the trip, but also sounds sketchy.

I definitely don't wanna take the 4 hour steamboat springs detour because thats where every semi and RV are gonna be.

Can't be worse than enduring the snow storm in the mountains on the way home last year only to be stuck in denver due to blowing snow and zero visibilty east of the city on I-70 all the way thru Kansas and Nebraska. Ended up taking the southern route thru Kansas and Missouri the next day since I-80 in Nebraska was still closed. Drove 24 hours straight thru to make it home. Ugh!

I'm not from Colorado but I worked out there in the mountians for a few years. The pass that goes through Aspen won't be open that early in the year. Cottonwood won't be open. Highway 50 would probably be the best Route.

They say the road will be clear in 4 days.

Good news, it sounds like CDOT has opened a single lane of traffic in each direction on I-70. I'm sure this will play a little bit of havoc with the traffic, but when you're already driving 1,600+ miles what's another 45 minute wait in traffic to get through the area. http://www.coloradodot.info/news/media-room.html

The media screwed up on the mileage thing. It isn't 200 ADDITIONAL miles. Just 200 miles around. You can go north to Steamboat and around, or south to Monarch Pass, and on to Montrose and up to I-70 that way.
