Depends on your definition
as I mentioned on a soon to be deleted thread

Quote:
shock is not the integral part of the suspension system whereas strut is both the structural and the integral part of the system.

http://www.shockabsorbersworld.com/automotive-struts.html
or more simply you can't assemble the front without it - so it's a strut - however you can assemble the back suspension without it - so that's a shock.

However that's not universally agreed upon - since a 'coil over shock' suspension would also meet that and several folks want to distinguish those.

A more common definition of strut is shorthand for a MacPherson strut but that's a differentia not the genus .

a proper definition is probably from SAE - but I don't have a copy - and yeah the parts manuals say shock.

Even though they are labeled and sold as "struts" they are actually shocks.

Struts take place of a UCA and is subjected to axial loads(via no UCA) and the "shocks" in the front of the KJ only is subjected to load bearing weight and that is it,and we have a UCA also.

That is correct for a MacPherson strut, and a few other specific types of strut, it is not the most general definition of the word.

No Tom I don't think that you don't know crap. I made one comment and let it go. Your the one being childish and bringing stuff back up. I'm sorry if I bruised your ego. Don't worry I'll be the bigger man and back down to rev. Mud. Cause I wouldn't want to undermind you in front of your loyal fallowers.

First I don't have an ego, thats something for 20 year olds
Second, I don't have any fallowers what ever that is , oh maybe followers, don't have them either, just people who are friends and similar tastes in vehicles etc.
Third, MMMMM I'm not the one who came up with this post to try and prove me and others wrong, did I?
You're the one who has made remarks in different posts, and have the little diagram in your sig.
I told you nicely what the difference was, but you have been the one to challenge what I said. If I was wrong I would of said OK and moved on but ......

Now who was it that did this poll?

Not I my friend.

If you have an issue with me, then PM me and we'll take care of it off line, other wise I will continue to call what is on the front of a KJ a shock!

:ROTFL: :ROTFL:

Not even gonna give you a reply on that. The problem has been handled as well as possible and You have only seen half of the story.

I guess Monroe, KYB, and Rancho are all wrong they are shocks.

wouldn't be the first time such items have been mislabeled, however they may be mislabeled for a reason

i believe they decided to call them "struts" due to the design of the can on the shock, rather than the installed use

shocks most often have bolts for mounts at either end, where ours has a can to clevis and a "stud" end but even some strut applications have single bolt connections at either end and look more like our rear shocks mounted in a very odd configuration

i believe strut would be less confusing to a common consumer due to the easily recognizable shape of the can

the fox coil overs, which are direct replacements for all intents and purposes, same general mounting configuration and everything, decided to call them shocks

i'm sure the same "mislabeling" with can to clevis - stud end shocks gets intentionally or unintentionally made with other vehicles that have similar front suspensions

i guess you could say it's an understandable confusion, but at the same time, not really a confusion, since no matter what you call it, everyone knows what you're referring to

Its a generic term to call them struts like jarhead stated

kind of along the lines of someone calling his newly bought Liberty a .... car :ROTFL:

and much better than a PM I got about a year ago asking which "thingys" were better in the front Ranchews or Old Man Equipment :banghead: :5SHOTS: :5SHOTS: :5SHOTS:

From the definitions I have seen in suspension crap, we have coil-over shocks on the front.

I'd have to agree that the KJ has a coil over shock front suspension.

From WikiAnswer:
Quote:
A shock absorber or coil-over-shox is a unit in which spring & bump stopper are arranged concentric (rather coaxial) with the damper to save space required for seperate installation of each.

A strut is a coil-over-shox with additional degrees of freedom for steering the wheel (provided by a bearing which partially replaces a ball joint) and articulation of the wheel (provided by the top mount which doubles in as the upper wishbone / control arm).

A strut is thus, a combination of a number of suspension components viz. spring, damper, bump stopper, upper control arm and probably one ball joint.

Since the front end suspension has an upper control arm and upper ball joint, it would be wrong to refer to the shock/spring combination as a strut. The front end has coil over shocks :)

I agree that if there is a upper and lower control arm then it is a shock, however i have refered to them as struts from time to time mainly due to me commng from the tuner world to the offroad world.
When i lifted my Ram one of my tuner buddys ask why the front "struts" looked funny. He had never seen a shock that did not hold the spring :ROTFL:

True, but the basic differences between the the strut and coil over are highlighted and that is the important part. I just wanted to give credit to the source :)

Main difference is as Troy stated. Struts actually bear an axial load of the front suspension. Shocks do not. Ours is a coil-over-shock design and and only bears the vertical load of the vehicle.

So Shox it is.
