I was in traffic in my girlfriends Mini on I-64 East over the summer. We were going to my beach house. Stuck in traffic for 2.5 hours moving at literally 1/2 mph. Turns out that a car broke into flames so they had to shut down 1 lane. Mini's are not the best A/C cars in 110* heat.

Getting out of the North, Northwest Suburbs of Chicago is the worst thing on a Friday
Rush hour starts around 2 pm and what it normally takes 45 min it becomes easily 2 hrs
Driving thru Downton Chicago or any of the bypass highways it is just not funny anymore
Worst thing - You cannot avoid it!
DARN FRIDAY TRAFFIC!

Last September...evacuating Houston because of hurricane rita. Wasn't so much in it because we stayed off the highways. It was craziest thing i've ever seen; almost two straight days of bumper to bumper traffic.

Longer. We were working in Victorville and took 15 up to Vegas. Didn't think of how it was the Friday on a 4th of July weekend. Sucks if you have to pee. It's a two lane highway that goes in a straight line forever, how can there be traffic right?

A couple years ago, out in Western Colorado a boulder slammed through I-70 (big hole) and closed down I-70 for days!!!. People were stuck there for days in that traffic jam.The worst had to be that first car after the boulder went through the highway and stopped them cold. No way out.

Glad I wasn't in that jam.

Uvalax236 already said it, but I'll add: Anything between Richmond, VA and VA Beach, VA on 4th of July weekend. Holy COW! I thought DC rush hour was bad (speaking of that, how can a circular, limited-access road with 16 lanes come to a stop...ever?). Anyway, it's crazy in both directions from Richmond to VAB allllLLLLLLllllll summer. Took 5 hours to get to Williamsburg on 4th of July weekend once...that's 40 miles from my house. This place is crazy...and most of the time it's not because there's a wreck...just too much traffic and REALLY bad road engineering.

Been there done that route. I was stationed in Norfolk, VA and drove back to Ohio many times going up to DC and then across to Breezewood (18-wheeler city). I swore never ever ever to drive to DC in the morning or out of DC in the afternoon during the week, ever again.

The wife, mother-in-law and son departed form Roanoke VA destination Ft. Meyers Beach FL mid Jan. BIG snow storm hit, we were heading down I-77 into North Carolina. Some big rigs jack knifed stopping everyone, nowhere to go but wait. Waited 6 hours, glad we just gassed up (well not everybody). Speaking of gas....my mother-in-law....mid 70's  she would pass gas and blame it on my wife  It was hard to hold back the laughter. I had to get out of the car. I was sooooo glad to get moving.

I-17 out of Phoenix on the weekends is horrible. Everyone in Phoenix is trying to get out of the desert on the same two lane road and someone usually wrecks in the hills by Black Canyon City.
