Post subject:  Oil change poll, Who changes yours?

Who does your oil changes?
Please mention why you chose a certain person or place to change your oil. Shop loyalty? Convenience? No tools or knowhow to do the job? Price?
Any other reasons?

PLEASE also post at what mileage you Normally change the oil. (I could post another poll for that however.....)

Thanks for participating!

Lifetime oil change by dealer (~$250)

Let's see

10W-30 Synthetic oil: $3.50 qt x 5 = $17.50
Oil Fliters (GEESH!) I see prices Checker Auto Online from $2.99 to $12.96. I'll go with $6.99/filter

That is ~$24.49 per oil change at every 3,000 miles.

It would take 10 oil changes or ~30,000 miles by the time I pay off the cost for the dealer cost. Then all of the rest of the oil changes are completely free...plus the dealer always check my washer fluid (refills my washer bottle and checks/airs my tires). GRAVY!

Yes, I have to deal with scheduling and waiting in the lobby but with the skids underneath (making it harder to do a change, I'll let them spill oil on their floor and clean up the mess and worry about disposal of the used oil and filter.

I always check everything before I leave the lot though.

Lately I've been taking mine to my local oil change shop. I like that fact that I don't have to deal with discarding oil and filter, plus theres always the liability factor - if I miss something during the oil change that causes a problem with my engine I have to eat the cost, but if they miss something they are responsible for correcting it.

I was using the dealership for the majority of mine, since I didn't have all the tools to do it myself. But I went out and got the tools needed and now plan on doing it myself with my 11 year old son. Great father son time.

I have my dealer do it just to keep a track record, should anything go wrong it's in thier computer,I usualy change it just under 3,000 & use Mobil 1 full synthetic which I buy it's cheaper that way & I use thier filter I was using Mobil 1 filters but they told me I at least have to purchase something from them so I just get thier filter kinda silly but oh well & I did it for a long time an choose to not mess with vehicles anymore unless a mod. is in order

Just about all suggested maintenance is included in my payments until 72K miles. So the dealer does it every 3k.

Why pay someone else to do the job when I am perfectly capable of completing the task myself. As soon as Libby cools down it takes me about 10 min. and I'm on my way.

Its just more fun to do it myself then wait in a lobby for 1/2 hour waiting for someone to do it. Plus YOU can choose what oil/filter to use.

I know how to...but Im 24 (and a daddy's girl) and since my ex is mean (making me now single)...my dad does it for me! :) Speaking of which its about that time, so he needs to get on the ball...lol!

Being a female, going to the mechanic is the worst experience. Mechanics are typical manly pigs (no offense to anyone)...I have been so screwed over by mechanics its not even funny. They think b/c you're a girl, you're dumb when it comes to the mechanics of a car/vehicle. So b/c Im a girly looking girl (who does know some mechanics darnit) I get talked to like a complete moron. I mean I love a guy who knows lots about mechanics...but not to the point that he has to talk down to me! Therefore I avoid going to the mechanic as much as possible... :x

Just start talkin' shop around `em and they will change their tune....or play the flirt card to get lower prices.

I just have the dealer do it because I purchased that extended service package. So for now its free. I have noticed though that they take forever to change my oil.

Used to let the dealer do it, cause I got a book of 14 free oil changes thrown in when I bought my KJ new in 03. I got tired of killing an entire Saturday morning everytime i needed an oil change, and I wanted to start running Mobil 1 synthetic in it, so I did the last change myself, and will continue to change it myself. Local autozone is only about 5 miles down the road, so its really easy to drop the old oil off. Plus the dealer seemed to always be half a quart off.

Not a jeep, and not easy to change. I wouldn't take it to the dealer though, as they charge $120. Indi shop for sure.

I get my KJs oil changed at Gateway Tire and Battery near my house. My dad has gone there for years and had work done there on all of his cars so I followed him there. they give a loyal customer discount I think...unless my father worked out a deal with them or something.

My dealer does it for free. CRD changes are messy and they use any oil I take to them. So I'm just paying for the oil and I spend the "wasted" time test driving new Jeeps until they're done with mine. 8)

I went to the dealer for the first change because it was free and I know that D/C has a gorilla at the factory that just torques the filters on so you need a 40 foot extension on your ratchet to get them off.

I did the next two as it is not hard and I enjoy it. I use Mobil 1 and a Mopar filter ( since it is still under warranty ). I do it when it is convenient for me rather than wasting time at the dealer. Takes about 45 minutes since I'm old and have titanium holding my hip together so I don't move like I used to. I noticed that it is a little more difficult since I put on the skids but still not that bad. I do my girl-friends car usually at the same time and hers is more difficult. That is another hour so I'm usually done with both and cleaned up within 2 hours.

If it is real cold out and I don't feel like doing it I bring it to a mechanic up the street who I trust.

Lifetime oil changes were included with my Jeep from the dealer. At first I was bringing it in as you would Sevice Plan A but the dealer put Service Plan B on the sticker so now I bring it in every 3,000 miles. I could change it myself, but it's included anyways and I like the look's I get at the dealership when they see the truck :)
