My Anti-Lock brakes failed on my 05 KJ Sport when I had to slam on my brakes at about 70mph to try to avoid hitting a deer. The Insurance company seems to think that Chrysler is to blame. Anyone heard anything about the Anti-lock brake system?

What exactly failed? The ABS pump? The hydrualic brakes themselfs? Wheel sensors? How do you know the ABS failed?

Well instead of braking to a stop, my friend, I skidded to a stop and ruined four tires. The Mechanic told me that it was because something with my Anti-lock brakes failed and caused them to lock-up.

the only tsb for abs isn't really even for the abs system. Tsb# 08-027-04 "any inadvertent safety system component or associated wiring damage/modification or component location change may disable any of the safety systems."

Interesting.. I'll have to look and see if my wires or anything is damaged to the abs system.

Was the brake light or ABS light on before-during-after this "lockup" ? Did any of those lights even come on at all? If not how was the mechanic able to tell the ABS system failed? <you couldn't if everything is operating correctly.

If before it was his own fault not getting it fixed
If during or after it could of been a bad wheel sensor and they go out on any vehicle

Plus bad brakes can lead to wheel sensor problems, junk will build up on the magnetic sensor and give false reading, and all of that is not Chrysler's fault.Mud and ice can do the same thing also.

No I didn't get any lights at all. This is what he said and I'm directly quoting him. "Anti-Lock brakes huh? Them darn things locked up that's why you got for flat spots on your tires they are completely flat like a square on all four tires." So are you telling me when he put new brakes on about 2 weeks ago it could be his fault that it happened the way it happened? I mean I don't blame Chrysler for nothing and why would I, I love Chrysler, I mean if it wasn't for them we would all be Jeepless right?!

Yep it could have been all his fault on the brake install 2 weeks before.Could have messed up one of the wheel speed sensors, maybe not enough to turn on the light but enough to impede proper operation.Worse case would be he doesn't have ABS and thinks he does,ABS was not a standard feature until '06 for a KJ,it was a paid for option.

I almost bet you dont have ABS. I have an 05 Renegade Loaded sunroof everything but no ABS. I am sure it was an option you should be able to tell if it has abs or not. Is it snowy there drive across some snow and slam on the breaks if its just quiet and makes no noise or the pedal doesnt vibrate you dont have abs. If it does shake and make noise then you have abs. ABS wont let you lock up the wheels which leads to longer stopping times but more control. With out ABS you have to control your brakes yourself and it can greatly increase stopping distances.

look for an electrical wire going to the hub assembly. he would have to be an fu**ing retard not to notice if you had abs or not. the wire runs from the abs computer to the hub assembly where it gets info from the wheel speed sensor. thats how it knows if the wheel is moving or locked up. if three wheels are turning and one is not then it knows that wheel locked up and boom throws the abs light. heres a pic...not from a jeep but same idea.......

Might as well point that finger back to the owner also for not knowing that he did or did not have ABS to begin with instead of immediately blaming Chrysler for a "perceived problem" that was never really there from the owners lack of knowledge about his own vehicle. Knowing is half the battle  .

First, I will say this: I never ever once said that I blamed Chrysler. PERIOD
Second, I have a degree in History not AUTO MECHANICS NOR AUTO REPAIR.
Third and Lastly, If I knew every f'n thing about my jeep, I simply would not be on the forums here. I mean why else would you come to a forum but yet to ask questions?

So I propose those questions to you 8)

he's got a point tjkj, but you do to, yes in a perfect world everyone would know but a mechanic of ALL people should have looked at that first. that was my point. sorry if i ruffled any feathers. at least you know for future reference lil liberty.

Oh you didn't ruffle any feathers it was tjkj that ruffled my feathers. I mean he acted like everyone should know about what the hell ABS is and where it is and all that. I mean honestly if I knew where the hell the ABS was or if I had it then I wouldn't have posted this and asked the questions. I mean honestly it was a chump move on TjKj's behalf for posting what he did, because I never said a bad word about Chrysler you can research that yourself I mean that's why the internet was invented, contrary to some belief it was for Porn! But seriously I wouldn't have joined the forums if I knew everything about my darn jeep. I mean if you have that big of a problem with my posts and me being a jeep owner then I'm sorry thats your problem and only you can deal with it. So don't point no fingers at me, because I don't know a darn thing about this vehicle, all I do is drive it and maintain it, but Cluelessklewer you didn't do anything.

Not that I expect everyone to know everything about there vehicle but come on the basics should be known, like year, make, model, color(you'd be surprised how many don't even know one of those 1st 4),and safety features. So your telling me when you went shopping for a vehicle you never asked about the basic safety features that where included on a vehicle? Service records,if used? Warranty info? I'm not trying to start anything but come on just the bare basics and sorry about ruffling your feathers.

Number one: Safety features is the last thing I am worried about. I know Chrysler makes darn good products so, Safety doesn't worry me.
Number two: I know my year its a 2005, I know my make it's a Jeep, I know my model it's a Sport with a 3.7L V6 which means it should have 6 spark plugs key word there should. I know my color its pearlcoat black with the gray fenders and gray bumpers. I know when I bought it, it had 28,000 miles and it was babied. Now it has 61128 miles and I baby it, I just drive a lot.
Number three: I know a little bit about cars but I don't know anything about ABS or what to look for until I was told by Clueless. I had a 95 Dodge Neon that I tore all apart, so I know the basics of vehicle components. But I have never had to deal with ABS, and that's because only one vehicle that my family owns has it and that's our 01 Dodge Durango and my mother drives that, so I don't touch it.
Finally: You didn't ruffle my feathers it's just you assumed everyone should know everything about cars. When I buy a car I research it online through the Company's websites such as ford.com jeep.com dodge.com and that's how I get my info, and I know what I want when I get there that way there's no hassle and I can haggle down the price.
