Chrysler is recalling nearly 210,000 Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicles due to potential problems resulting from excessive corrosion that could lead to a loss of control by the driver.

Chrysler, which is controlled by Fiat , is recalling the estimated 209,724 Jeep SUVs from model years 2004 and 2005. Some may be equipped with rear lower control arms that can fracture due to corrosion caused by road salt used in certain states, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Chrysler is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue, NHTSA said.

The recall is expected to begin by the end of April and the rear lower control arms on all affected vehicles will be replaced, according to NHTSA.

NHTSA said it opened a preliminary evaluation of the issue in April 2011 based on nine complaints about fractures due to excessive corrosion. The probe was upgraded to an engineering analysis in September 2011.

The cars affected in the recall were originally sold or are currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C., according to the documents.

Interesting, wonder if it will be an inspection or a parts replacement.

It sounds like an inspection and replace as necessary, I have a 2005 also, but I live in Florida, and my Jeep was purchased in Florida, so I am not included. (no road salts) :JEEPIN: :5SHOTS:

Yeah it's sad that they are being forced to recall something that is 100% owner fault.Washing under the vehicle more then never is part of the maintenance.Again what a sad country we live in when this junk happens for lazy poeple.

Sounds like they are refering to the trailing arms not the wishbone. If they replace the trailing arms, wonder if the new part will be beefier.

I've already replaced both of mine. The first in February of 2011 (it snapped on me), the second in December (I noticed it while doing my rear brakes).

You can see my original post here viewtopic.php?f=1&t=58706

and a picture of the one that snapped here https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/r ... directlink

Here's hoping I get reimbursed.

Sounds to me like there was something sub-par in the way the parts were engineered. Maybe the steel wasn't treated properly. If this was an owner issue, why wouldn't there be recalls on the 2002s and 3s? I over over 215,000 on my 03. They don't "recall" parts lightly. There was also the mention of the engineering analysis. Face it, after ball joints, window regulators, etc. it's a pretty bold step to blame this on owner maint without knowing all the details.

Check out page 316 in a '04 KJ's owners manual.

If it was a engineering issue then why are KJ's not located in the "salt belt" states effected or later model year KJ's that use the same rear LCA's.

Why were not earlier year models located in the salt belt like mine, not affected? Obviously a difference in materials.

And again,
Ball joints
Window regulators
Oh yeah, airbags
I believe there was a brake issue also.

Blower motor
UCAs
Torque converter ( forget which model )
Tires
Etc.

There have been a multitude of KJ issues.
Not saying more or less than other vehicles.
Just sayin maybe it's not the owners fault as you say.

And again, if it was an owner issue, older models would have been affected as they tend to have more miles. Obviously there was a difference in the part which resulted in later models having issues and earlier models not. If you cant see the logic in this... Well, we will have to agree to disagree.

'02 KJ's had the massive tubular rear LCA's but '06 and '07's have the same LCA's as '04 and '05's.

All those listed are not effected by salt besides the front UBJ's which by the way are limited to only some years located in salt belt states and the rest are not recalls at all but TSB's.

And again read page 316 in the owners manual(as in the '04 KJ's).

So how do you explain the 03s not being part of the recall?

I can't and why it's a BS recall. They are only targeting salt belt states with some years even though from '03-'07 they used the exact same rear LCA's.Only the '02 KJ's had different rear LCA's.

Just because it's the same part DOES NOT mean it's the same steel or it was heat treated properly on those years, etc. Which is my whole point. If it was an "owner issue" as you seem to believe, '03s would be included since as you say, the part is the same. I have a feeling that there was in fact a change in either a manufacturing process or a grade of steel or a heat treating process, etc. That is why the recall. Again, if not, why are 03s, which would have more mileage and longer exposure, not included?

It may be that they changed venders, (which happens all the time) and those years the steel was bellow par and/or workmanship was crap,it has happened before. (remember it is always about profits) :banghead:

Hi , I just got my recall yesterday . The dealer says they will replace the rear lower control arms despite there being no damage to mine . In the UK only 2004-2005 models are recalled but all will be changed . Despite what you may think we don't use alot of salt here , especially compared with some of you guys . I have seen some pics of arms which are so badly corroded the bushes are hanging out .

Update: Just heard on the news that Jeep is extending the recall to 06 & 07 model years.
Hmmm, guess its not the owners fault after all as some here have suggested. Still haven't included he 03s though.
