So I started getting calls from all of my relatives yesterday saying that the people we have the loan for our Jag were calling saying we hadn't made the payment. We had sent it out to be there on time so I called the loan company to find out they had received it and not to worry about the calls. WTF? I could see if I had been late but they had it on time as always. But now my relatives are asking is everything ok? Are you gambling out there in Vegas? Whats going on with you? Kind of crappy if you ask me. I guess all these companies are scared, but to do this pisses me off. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it just a sign of the times?

I've had them call me, but not anyone from the list of closest relatives that don't live with you.

I work in the debt buying industry, and I gotta say that it sounds like someone was fishing for information. Did your relatives (or you) verify that the number the people who called gave you was for the loan company? Normally, the loan company would wait at least a week before calling to ask where your payment was.

There have been similar scams before, and the scammers tried to get relatives panicked about their son/grandson/brother/etc, so that they wouldn't be rational & give out credit card/banking info to "help" their relative.

Glad you were smart about it, checked into the situation, and no one got scammed!

Nope, my relatives were given a number to have me call. I did not call that number I called the one I have for them. Never even checked to see if it was the same, but they did confirm that this does happen on occaision and not to worry. Oh and this did start happening about a week after my payment is due. But like I say it was paid on time.

Hmm, since the payment was made on time, and they still called, I'm thinking that it was an honest mistake.

BUT....keep your eyes, ears, and mind open to scammers fishing for personal info.

..Id like to agree with the 'honest mistake' statement made earlier (as much as I would like to believe that everyone is out to get me, or you, in this case).. I had something similar happen way back when I had a pager (member those?) ..I started getting pages to an unfamiliar number, and when I called they said I hadnt paid my bill, so I took in the receipt to the store, and they told me that it had been a mistake and they had been paging everyone who had paid instead of those who hadnt.. They didnt call any relatives, though (not even sure if I needed references to get the thing)..

But, since the loan company confirmed that it does happen on occasion, I would stick to the 'honest mistake'..

I can see how it would suck, though.. A car loan is a bit different than an overdue pager bill.
